Found a new Canon C500 Promo Video for the Need For Speed movie that opens this Friday.

Cinematographer Shane Hurlbut, ASC takes you on an adrenaline-pumping ride behind the scenes of the upcoming blockbuster Need for Speed. Shane relied on the Canon Cinema EOS C500 digital cinema camera, the Cinema EOS 1D-C digital SLR, and Canon lenses to capture the heart-pounding, high-velocity speed racing action coming soon to the big screen. Directed by Scott Waugh and starring Aaron Paul, Need for Speed hits theaters on March 14, 2014.

Thanks for sharing the link!

I wonder how much a factor was the camera size vs. image quality in choosing the C500 as the in-car camera.

My guess is the size didn't have a significant role. For example, an Alexa M would have been potentially easier to work with. From Hurlbut's blogs it sounds like they chose the C500 and Alexa and just went with it. They certainly had the budget to do what they wanted to do.

The thing is.. at the part were Shane says, "everyexterior shot is the c500" ( 01':01")it cuts away to the 1dC on a movi type stabilizer! ;)

he said "all night exteriors". AFAIK, Alexa was the daytime exterior cam, but the Canons were more vibrant for the lowlight. (and obviously better for much of the embedded car work.)

'Nuff said.... =)

"
Director Scotty Waugh wanted to do this whole movie practically, without CGI cars, planes, choppers, etc. He wanted it to be realistic. If a car went rolling off a bridge on fire, the driver did not jump out of the car in mid-air, grab hold of the light pole, grab a hot chick in mid-flight and land 300 feet below unscathed. With this directive, we were looking for a camera that delivered a very realistic look, but was beautiful, captivating, and provided an image filled with vitality, youth! Using a camera that no one had seen on the big screen felt just right for our story. We needed a camera that could shoot 4K resolution for reframing and possible zoom ins in post to give us the feeling of a different lens. Our schedule was almost unachievable and we realized early on that this would be essential for post and for our director."

Gopro H3 gets a nod. And Alexa M makes an appearance.

4K was a factor, in part. allowed for more options in resizing and stabilization, as well as digital zooms.
