C300: Canon C300 (mark 1), autofocus and Tamron lens

Hi,

My Canon 28-70mm lens has just packed up and Canon says they can't fix it.

I'm thinking of getting the Tamron 28-70mm VC, as I've read really good comparisons with Canon but for a fraction of the cost.

Has anyone any experience using this with the Canon C300 (mark 1) continuous auto-focus? Will it work? Or should I spend the money buying a Canon lens?

Many thanks

Honestly, I would try out any off-brand lens with you camera before purchasing. I have had some real wankiness with Tamron lenses and the C100 and Canon is upfront about saying they want nothing to do with non-Canon lenses. I live here in NYC and I would take my C100 down to BH or Adorama and ask them to try a particular lens on my unit before I purchased it. Not sure if you have that option in Glasgow, but that's my 2 cents...

are you looking for tamron only? because tokina has a 24-70mm which doesn't get alot of mention but it still packs a punch and can go toe to toe with canon's 24-70...

If you are using the autofocus, then definitely go for Canon.

Off brands are often a real pain in crunch situations. That is why I Buy once and Cry Once.

Hi folks,

Thanks for the advice. Very much appreciated.

The youtube clip that control4userguy looks like the Tamron 28-70 does work with Canon C300 continuous autofocus. There is an good camera shop in Glasgow with limited stock, I'll go along and try it out if they have one - good idea scorsesefan.

I hadn't thought of Tokina but I'll look into it too
Amira-user. Thanks. A bit worried that it may not work if I ever decide to upgrade to another Canon camera though so may do as you say indiawilds and stick with Canon lens.

Just trying to save a bit of cash but don't want to regret it.

Thanks everyone.

Third party lenses are substandard to Canon in resale value and may work or may not work with Autofocus. The Sigma ART lenses are very tempting as they offer focal lengths and lens speeds that Canon doesn't. But if you are going for a common focal length like you are discussing here, get a Canon lens, you won't regret it.

The Tamron 24-70 continuous autofocus works like a champ on the C100. And the image quality is spectacular. And it comes with VC (IS). And the price is way lower than the Canon 24-70. That said: I recently experienced an autofocus failure on my Tamron 24-70 and had to send it in for repairs. Long story short, the AF motor crapped out. Tamron offers a 6 year warranty on the 24-70, though. The lens was working fine and producing some spectacular images for over 8 months as my primary lens on many shoots before the issue occurred. Maybe a fluke, maybe not.

The one and only thing I don't like very much about the Tamron 24-70 compared to the Canon is the Tamron's stiff throw. It's something you can work with, but it takes some getting used to.

Thanks again folks for the good info.

puredrifting I agree, Canon lens keep there value really well compared to the other third party lens. I was looking into Sigma ART lens. Good advice.

jthabel, good to hear about your experience with the Tamron 24-70 on C100. The VC (IS) was something that attracted me to it, along with the good reviews and the price. I had a similar failure with auto focus with a canon lens a while back. Great to hear about a 6year warranty. A big plus. Thanks

Greg Hughes, I was talking about the shop in the Trongate, Merchant City Cameras. A great wee independent shop. Any other suggestions in the city are most welcome though. Thanks

Great advice for folks and very much appreciated.
