C300: Canon C300 and Sony question

None of the set ups you mention are onboard, sub$10k which is what 'town' the FS7 and c300 are (the thread is about the C300!)

Completely correct - Scarley/Epic, 700/7q - C500 all great image makers.. probably better than the FS7 in pure IQ

S

Fair enough yes. Like i mentioned, the FS7 does have an advantage (for now) being a 4k 10bit sub $10k camera taking account one is happy with XAVC compression or buying the additional module to get pro-res.

I have a feeling that the new lineup of canons coming up will be amazing too. Great times.

And you're also right, it is a C300 forum. Taking 4k and 10bit off topic and discussing low light, the C300 holds it's own.

Great still frames, how about some low light looks in SLOG3 without noise or post processing. How about them Red's and Magenta's. Some actual footage. You're defending the FS7 across every thread, so I'm simply suggesting for you to post footage to back it up. Talk is cheap like they say.

Sam, I can take the personal jibes, it's water off a duck's back to me, but this comment is extremely silly and I can't let it pass without comment. The whole point of Slog3 is that it is designed for grading. You have to wash it through post. It's exactly the same as Clog in that respect. I spend no more time getting a decent image out the FS7 as I did with the C300. This is a fact that seems lost on you.

Also, some of the images I posted were shot in low light, why do you think the guy was using a torch?

Furthermore, I'd love to post some of the footage I've shot on the FS7 in the last couple of months, but I can't post it yet as the jobs I've shot so far are still ongoing or are not for public consumption. If I get time over the next month, as I hope to, then I'll shoot a personal project or two. Then, I can post it on Vimeo and you can tell me how crap the reds and magenta are.

BTW. you say 'talk is cheap'. I agree. I say, 'consider the source'. You can see who I am, I use my real name and post a link to the website my 11-year-old made for me. People can judge whether they think I might know what I'm talking about or not. That's fine. You on the other hand hide behind a username and don't post a link to your website. You might be Roger Deakins' love child for all I know. But I don't, and that's the point:-)

Note the smilie...

I could be Roger Deakins' love child but i could be also working for Sony talking nothing except good about their cameras and their FS7's.

A high end DP might be using an Alexa, an Epic, an Amira or maybe an F65 but seeing that we're discussing an FS7, then we know the budgets involved and possibly what you and me might afford to actually shoot with.

I believe stuck-ups have no place in any industry. And from reading many of your posts, you do realize you come out as if you know it all. Just letting you know that you do NOT.

My first camera was a Super VHS cam from a pawn shop when i discovered i loved film making. Can you remember yours and how you learned the art? This might help you in becoming less of an a@$@@!* toward people. :)

I don't hide for anyone and I care nothing of what you think. You did notice the lengthy (professional) conversation with Morgan, maybe you can learn some people skills like him to go with your so called technical expertise.

Smilies are nice.

Sam, whilst I think that's a great contribution to the forum, could you take any further insults you have for me to PM. I'm sure everyone else is getting a little bored of this.

This is my FS7 with nat light, Slog3, LC709 lut applied no further grading - personally Im thinking the skin tone is rich and the file clean (BTW this is 60p)

Sam im telling you i dont go on specs - only on having tried a lot of cams.

Edit
and I shot a band rehearsal tonight - 4000ISO (Slog3 LC709LUT), 4.5 lens, one redhead bounced in the corner, looks clean and skin looks.. well no magenta.

I don't see it. To me the skin tones look cold and lack warmth, something the 5D3 has right out of the gate. I'm not saying the FS7 isn't a great camera, but those of us who are used to Canon MOJO do have a hard time with the colors.... it's all relative I guess.

To me, I just simply prefer the skin tones of Sony S-Log because it's very neutral. I don't want overly warm skin tones of Canon. These are S-Log 2 shots from the FS700 + 7Q and this took me less than a few minutes a piece to get a nice place skin wise. Not overly warm, but a bit more sophisticated looking IMO. S-Log 3 from the FS7 is even better.

Skin tones are a personal taste. For me, I just prefer what I am able to get out of S-Log. Can has a nice baked in look and if that's what you want, stay with it. I just want my images to be more unique. I think Canon is great for people who don't like to grade much. S-Log is for people like me, grading fanatics who want a nice, neutral image to start with.

As for Ebrahim Saadawi, he has no work or footage that he's shot posted, so how can we take what he says seriously? We can't.

Blackmagic cameras shoot in an incredibly flat log profile, but as soon as you add a curve and 80% saturation, you have beautiful golden skintones. Why can't Sony hire a couple colorists and fix s-log to work the same way?

Fair enough. but what we are not seing is magenta or other skin issues.

This is the LC709 LUT which is designed to give an alexa flat style look - for more punch and sat one would choose the normal 709 LUT which does look a bit more 5d (I love the 5d!)

The thing with a hard profile like 709 is that one clips the DR unless one moves to recover with secondaries (detail that would just be gone with a 5d)

Really nice screen caps Ugene! I am partial to the natural looking skin of Slog also but it all comes down to personal preference.

Liam also those are some great shots you posted earlier.

Can we all just admit that Sony does not produce a bad image it comes down to personal preference of the operator/client. When I first started shooting C300 I worked with an executive producer that wanted everything shot on the Eos profile to look like the over saturated crushed 5D image that she liked. I hated the image the C300 was putting out under those conditions. It was ugly but I had to accept it was the personal preference of those paying the bills.

The thing is that with Slog you can do anything pretty much (becuase its 10bit) from 'wood/non grade log look' through to high say 5d out the box look.

I really like the '5d out the box look' and have struggled to get that from 8bit sony cameras

I agree, the Sony defiantly has way more detail and DR than the 5D3, and of course there are times when such a look "flat style" is needed or desirable. If I were a rich man I'd own them all!
