Canon C300 and high level of noise

I am not worried about the noise at high iso, but when I saw the noise in the black sheet behind the "censored" women in the funny review at iso 850 I got a little worried. The Canon log looked better compared to cine 1 and 2, but I still saw some noise. I then went back and looked again at some low light test that Bloom did comparing the FS100/ F3/ and 5Dll. I had originally thought the fS100 and F3 had no noise, but after I saw it on the C300 I could now see it in the FS100/ F3 although it was harder to see.

I am sure that some TV's can make this go away, but with the future of people watching movies over the internet I want my videos/movies to look good no matter where it is viewed.

I also find it confusing that some scenes that shouldn't have noise- do and others that one might expect noise- do not.

On another note, I really liked how the C300's DR handled the sun and the guy doing tricks on the bike in the funny review.

I had an opportunity to play with the C300 at a local demo the other day, the lit set-up being a table top still life with black duv on the table and in the background. The light hitting the duv on the table made it a dark gray - good for judging noise. The duv in the bg was pure black, nothing happening there. I didn't have time to play with many different gamma settings (what with 20 other guys waiting their turn), but the image output to 17" monitors looked better than the dark bg in the funny Vimeo video. Granted, it can be hard to pick apart what is noise and what is compression in online videos, but my sense is that the camera is not as noisy as you may be led to believe by watching that video. Plus that was an early model and changes may have been made since then. Anyway, the camera was very clean up to 5000 ISO, and still acceptable at 10,000 ISO (yes, nice tight grain structure). 20,000 ISO looked very noisy to me (as it should!), and I suppose some could argue it's filmic, but I can't get past that much noise. Far, far, far exceeds the 5DMII, and is an excellent lowlight camera. I'm not worried about noise at all with it.

Awh!!! so this fine noise grain is probably what's been having me like the look of this cam so much. This explains the filmic texture of the footage I've been seeing vrs the others. Good find. I'll take this noise and the look of it's aesthetics over the sony f3. I think the tight noise pattern on the dvx/hvx accompanied with certain brand of 35mm adapters is what we've been missing in the dslr world. this cam Is the closest thing I've seen to an hvx red rock 35mm adapter combo. choose your poison.

The minute I get a chance to get close to one of these I will. Less DR than an SLog'd F3, but I can see a lot of application for the C300. I admit since the advent of the AF100 I have turned around a little on the give me "10bit or give me nothing". Ive shot on the AF100 about 200 days this year and for a fast workflow its excellent. Next year will need more of that - so, whilst I have a Scarlet on order the C300 looks like a solid step up from the AF100 shooting with a log process ( I cant imagine 200 days shooting 4k RAW).

Why his colorist calls the inverse of luminance 'alpha' is beyond me. Of course, I see I am not alone if I look through the comments as well. I have to agree with you though, I can't wait to play with one of these things!

Just downloaded Nino´s and Mario´s footage to give it a test spin in my grading suite - pretty noisy at high ISO.
I also failed to see the filmish grainish organic-shmorganic thing. Tons of color nose and fixed pattern noise, getting worse when you touch it with a color wheel.
Nice skin tones and highlights roll off handling though.

From what I see here, a great camera, but calling it the queen of the night is way over the top IMHO.
Can´t hold a candle to the FS100 (noise wise), but I think that would not be a deal breaker.
Just add more light - like we did with the HVX200 - and you are golden.
The overall picture quality is quite nice.

Okay, here is my attempt to Nino Leitner´s and Mario Feil´s Canon EOS C300 – short film.

Check out the brilliant review and watch the short:

No fancy plug ins used, just plain old school curve tweaking.

Naturally, the present noise in the C300 images compared to the FS100 images will show another story: resolution remains tops in C300 footage, FS100 gets kind of grotesque due to whatever hurricane magic Sony's got going on internally.

I'd rather have the noise and resolution versus the mushy image of high ISO FS100 motion picture.

That's just preference, of course.

More importantly (to me, anyway) these videos remind me that I need to at least carry some Lite Panels and a Sun Gun around, still. There's no instant magic shooting off of street lamps.

Although I'm sure someone will say that it's compressed: Yes, it does look mushy to my eyes. Whatever the camera's doing to clean up the high ISO's is eating away at what detail it does resolve to my eyes.

I saw the same thing when I tested the cam out as well.

What's the problem at 1:03 with the aliasing on the white highlight at the top of the image? Did you import MTS directly into an Adobe product? Because that's what it looks like to me.

There are several things going on. The original upload was not HD, so you need to turn scaling off when you watch it - otherwise it´s just blown up.
Then the "Vimeo Magick" does some strange things to color and luma. The original file looked stunning for the circumstances (remember it was shot with the kit lens at nothing but moonlight).

Well that definitely explains that phenomenom. I'd love to see a full size screen cap from that scene :) At small size it looks nice, but I think if you really want to judge what is going on, an HD version at least would be a must to me. I'm so used to looking at HD Vimeo videos, I am not sure what SD->HD does to the image. (well, I do now :))
