C100: Canon C100 video samples of weddings in Israel and how I do it.

My name is Alexander Perel and I am wedding video photographer in Israel. For a couple of years I was shooting with Canon 5D II and now I am working with wonderful Canon C100. I really enjoy this forum and I decided to give something back. This is my experience with Canon C100:
  • The Picture - I shoot in Wide DR and Log, I found that Log is a little hard for the color correction so I prefer Wide DR. I really like the cinematic image right from the camera with Log and Wide DR profiles. The image is crystal clear with that camera a way better then my old Canon 5D II. Moire and aliasing not there or so little that I can not notice. The dynamic range noticeably better then 5D II. I have C100 for 3-4 month and I am surprised every time I open raw footage in NLE.
  • Sound - The sound is very important in wedding video photography. When I used Canon 5D II, I always recorded sound with Zoom recorder. I could not monitor the sound and hopped that everything is ok. Now I put sennheiser wireless on the C100 and monitoring with earphones and backing up with zoom recorder. The quality of the sound that C100 records is amazing, I do not think that I can tell a difference between the two.
  • Optics - This is my favorite part! I have a lot of glass but I decided to bring with me only three lenses. When I shoot brides preparations at her home or in a wedding saloon I use Canon 17-55 f/2.8 IS, It is wonderful overall lens, I am getting pretty shallow DOF in closeups and wide angle on slider or Steadicam. This is the ONLY lens that I can hold with my bare hands with out any support! The IS makes this happen, without it my footage is just too shaky. So this lens good for me in 30%-50% of my all wedding day, I also use it in the dance floor for standard(not art) footage. The second lens is Canon 50mm f/1.2 L, this lens is a beast! I am in love with the image I am getting from it, The focal length on C100 is very usable to me. With this lens I shoot some of the preparations and 80% of outdoor photo session. I use variable ND always in outdoor work, because I do not want to adjust iris, I want it constant all the time so I can control DOF. Third lens is my little jam, Nikon 85mm f/2.0 old manual lens, It is so small and build like a tank! very silky focus. I use this lens when I shoot raw footage for finishing wedding clip. I use it less then I wanted because the reversed focus, I am definitely going to use it more when I master the reversed focus :)
  • Support - Most of the time I use Konova K5 Slider when I shoot Wedding Dress, shoes, some makeup, decoration at the wedding atc. With Steadicam I do 5-10 shoots in all day. I bring Monopod to the preparations and wedding reception. The best support for me is a good rig, I use it most of the time, I find that rig in a good hands has much more art value then anything else.

- All footage was shot in Wide DR. The first and last shot was made with GoPro Black. On preparations I used Canon 50mm L most of the time, the first scene on the kitchen was shot handheld with Canon 17-55mm IS, also all wide shots. All outdoor was made Canon 50mm L on a rig, I love shoot with this lens against sunlight and getting those magical lighting. A couple of shoots with Steadicam was made with Canon 17-55mm IS.

Marina&Alex - All footage was shot in Wide DR. The preparations was shot with Canon 17-55mm on monopod and slider. All outdoor footage was taken with Canon 85mm f/1.8 (I do not use this lens any more).

Helena&Itamar - The preparations and outdoor photo session was shot on Log. I used Canon 17-55mm IS, Canon 35mm L and Canon 85mm f/1.8 on the all wedding day.

Youve done a pretty good job editing it as a "event" work, but now the industry seems to forwarding to "Cinematic Look" , and No offense, yours is just 50%

the 50% that you already has is the color, Couples will appreciate all of your Post productions

the other 50% you are missing, is Editing, the pace, you are still in "Event highlight style ".

for example, the H & I piece, you cut your image to the music beat, which is usually the event style, but its not wedding style, you should cut it based on the story & voice. the singers voice is a lot more prominent than the beat, and viewer starts to get uncomfortable of this editing

since its choppy ( the beat is not prominent and thus "un-hearable")

whats even gonna make your piece better is you try to include vows and ambient sound in it, like the birds, street , make your viewer feel they are in the pictures. otherwise its a motion slideshow.

I love your colors and image, btw. and the part on K & A when cutting onions, thats what im talking about.

if you start digging deeper in sound work now (layering the music, the voice, the ambient sound, the special sound effects) and make them work with your stunning image.

then you will become a rocket in the sky

Hope you all the best

Alexander, I too loved the way you coloured the footage. You say you prefer Wide DR, do you colour correct it afterwards? Would love to know what you do to it if so. Thanks

Yes, I use Wide DR in my wedding videography. When I take raw footage I always use Kelvin for the consistency in colors from shot to shot. In NLE I usually dial down reds in mid tones(skin+overall image) and a little bit in a shadow area(this gives more like matrix look). After that I can add some contrast(very little) with curves. What I am looking for is fresh clean look. You can Add Looks or Film Convert to get more filmic look. All the corrections I do are very minor, the raw image from the camera is just surprisingly amazing.

i mostly agree with shawn's input. some of the videos i feel should hit their marks a bit sooner, and the one where you cut to a beat, i think i see the effect you were going for, but it seems you didn't stick with any particular beatline, rather just switching to whichever note matched what you wanted, this is what is probably making it so jerky in pace. you can jump to different beats/notes/etc, but it should be a flow, not a back and forth, here and there thing. it's far more time consuming, but the effect is great.

cheers,

I totally agree with you, The clip you all talking about is not edited by me. Because of lacking time, some times I give the editing to editor. I show this clip because it was shot on log(preparations and outdoor photo session).

Nice camera work, editing is about personal feeling (I like a little slower .-) ). What about WDR and ISO above 1250 (at 50i, not at 25p)? I see a lot of noise in a dark places in ISO3200. Did you use WDR in these lowlight scenes?

I use Wide DR in all footage, in 25p I can work up to 4000 iso and do not worry too much about grain (in wedding photography), the noise visible but not too much. In 50i I find more noise/artifacts at same iso setting, specially if you are making slow motion from 50i. The only thing I am missing in C100 is 50p :(

just stop. you are making us all look bad!

seriously beautifully made videos. look like fully fledged music videos, really impressive work.

i think you just sold me on the Canon 50mm 1.2 L

Thanks you very much!
Here some tips:
1 - Know your gear
2 - Look for good lighting everywhere you are shooting!
3 - Control WB, exposure - viewfinder or loop makes a huge difference outdoor.
4 - This one is huge: If nothing happens(80% in my case) - make things happen, talk to your subject, be funny, be physical and give your subject tasks to do, that will ensure that you will have some good raw footage.
