C100: Canon C100 Music Video - Please

Hello Everyone,

Just completed a music video with the Canon C100. I used a Ninja recorder and BNCR superspeed lens. Please check it out. The camera was a pleasure to work with. Also used an Angenieux Lens 25-250mm T 3.5.

Looks really solid and relatively clean. Night lighting and composition... subject gets weird though!

Can you tell us a bit about the profiles you shot in? Also how did you find the Ninja2 vs. AVCHD. I'm so on the fence about picking up the external recorder with my C100 and would love to hear your thoughts.

Thanks. I'll take weird in a good or bad way. This was my chance to mix in a little "Faster, Pussycat! Kill! KIll!", "The Crow", and "Lost Highway" into one project.

As for profile I used Cowpunks "Weed_Log". Thanks Cowpunk52. As for recording to Ninja, I just wanted to squeeze every ounce from the camera. AVCHD looks great but I was going to push the camera in artificially lit situations and do extensive color grading. If your doing a lot of run and gun live events or talking heads then I would us the AVCHD. It's a very good codec. If you doing green screen, narratives, or something for broadcast where you have time for camera setups and time for rigging then recorder is great. Either way, I think C100 looks good to me. It's not 4K but it's a solid image. I get to do my work and tell my stories until someone flips the bill for me to shoot on 70mm:)

I'll post some stills of what before and after grade. I was going for inky blacks. There was a lot more information in the footage but I knew was going to crush the blacks on this project.

Wow, that was something to see! I enjoyed watching to the end and was happy to see the bad guys get what they deserved.

Did you add grain to the shots? Some of them look really noisy, as if intentional.

Thanks for watching to the end. I used Filmconvert. I added grain for texture and more grit to the piece. I've also noticed inconsistent playback on YouTube with bad digital noise sometimes. It might streaming issue. It plays better in youtube. But I don't know if that's what you saw. But there is grain added. Again for watching and commenting.

Oh definitely good weird. This is actually one of the more impressive C100 videos I've seen in the wild, really excellent work.

I'm looking into those profiles right now. I've been shooting tons of tests with the AVCHD in Log, Wide DR, and with the Abelcine profiles, just trying to find the best ways to expose them for the least noise after bringing a moderate grade in. I've had good luck grading the stock CINEMA Log when I expose high, but keeping waveform low as some have suggested introduces horrible noise in the highlights.

Most of my commercial stuff I just shoot Wide DR and it always performs well. But for more creative videos - mostly narrative and music stuff - I really want a heavy grade and the AVCHD sometimes leaves me a little disappointed. I feel like a Ninja is in my future for that... but it is a bit pricy since I don't do much broadcast work.
