C100: Canon C100 Mark II Announced 60P, New VF, & New OLED Panel Texas Media Systems

Now the questions are:

-Could Canon have released an mk2 model adding even LESS features?
-Is there any other NEW videocamera in the c100mk2 price range, or even at half the price, that is NOT at least 422 50Mbps?

Is this a camera for 2015 (when it will reach stores), that has to live and be competitive for 2-3 years, up to 2017?
No 4k? Hardly a deal breaker. But no touch focus like the cheap 70D (?!), no broadcast codec, no 10 bit out, no 60p over HDMI, or SDI out, 100fps….
Well, of course not, so there can be room left for subsequent mkIII and mkIV versions.

Theworst of this release, along with the 7D2 one, is the glimpse at Canon's future roadmap.
All new DSLRs will have specs below this C100mk2, which means Canon is giving the DSLR video market to EVERYBODY else. Even to Nikon.

On the videocamp, most telling is the lack of 422, so it won't cannibalize the, already very outspeced, old C300. So, looks like there won't be a C300mk2 for a while.
And when it does come, it will HAVE to be featured under Sony's FS7, so it won't cannibalize the C500 either, which btw is a dead product, as the AMIRA has just killed it: same cost to rent/buy a 200fpsAMIRA as a C500+licensed7Q+VF+Frankenrig. Ask any Producer which one they'll pick.

Meanwhile the FS7 and F5/55 will eat the entire lower end Broadcast segment (below the F800) for breakfast.

etc, etc.

Sometimes looks like Canon lives in another planet, with no contact to rest of the world whatsoever.

....no 60p over HDMI

Is this true? Where did you hear this?

Then go buy one of those other cameras. It's that simple. It really is.

Probably ready and available for release. Just waiting for the green light from upper management...which I assume...they just got.

Partially kidding.

Watch the video here, it was posted on page 2 in this thread: http://cpn.canon-europe.com/content/news/canon_launches_the_eos_c100_mark_ii.do.

It answers a lot of questions. Here's what I got from it, but i probably missed some things:
- DIGIC DV 4 processor & new video processing system
- Improved image quality
- ISO 102400
- AVCHD & MP4 up to 1080/60p
- MP4 mode allows for slow & fast motion
- Dual Pixel CMOS AF as standard
- Face Detection AF with EF-S STM lenses
- New articulating 8.8cm 1.23mp OLED display
- New tiltable 1.1cm EVF with large eyecup
- Built in WiFi allowing camera remote control via web browser (no app required) and FTP file transfer
- Clean HDMI output up to 1080/60p with timecode & can include LUT on the HDMI signal when shooting in C-Log or Wide DR

I take this to mean that is allows for 60P output from HDMI...which is also its highest frame rate. Not terribly impressive...but a very welcome addition for those C100 users out there starving for it.

- Face Detection AF with EF-S STM lenses
The press release and specs seem to indicate the Face Detection AF will work with any lenses, but in that video it mentioned "with EF-S STM lenses." Can anyone confirm it will work with not just the EF-S STM lenses?

Does this mean that L glass will not work?
My guess is that it will work with L glass or any other EF lens, but just not as silent and smooth as with an STM lens. This is the same thing they were saying about the DPAF upgrade, that it was made for STM. Of course that works just fine on all the other Canon EF lenses and even most third party EF lenses.

I dont think face detection AF will work with any other lenses other than STM. It might have a chip in it and the camera has to see it or the function wont work.

Someone needs a hug?

Don't know what is more frightening, the possibility of you believing you know what an entire industry wants/needs or how personally offended you seem to be that a world leader technology isn't bending to your will. Lets assume for a second there is a flip side to the coin with even a glimmer of logic, it reads:

- The camera is a workhorse in the right hands
- It has a great price tag that allows both amateurs & professionals access to a professional tool
- The quality in which it captures those moving images is stunning(in the right hands)
- The ergonomics and usability have been praised by most of its owners
- The build quality, battery life, ND's, Preamps, AF, weight, external recording are tough to beat
- It can match the quality(in some cases outshine) cameras that cost 3-4 times as much
- It is one of the few large sensor cameras on the market that can perform in broad day light or no light

Now IF all of the above were NOT true, I doubt Canon would waste the r&d budget on a revision and we would be seeing a c200 or some other variant. Assuming it is true and unit sales are not dropping off, it makes a lot of sense as to why we are seeing the mk II with its features.

One thing I would love to know is how many c100 / fs700's have been sold to date. I'm guessing the C100 has a much bigger foot print in that pie chart and is in fact the reason Sony answered with the fs7. I'm sure Sony didn't foresee the O7Q breathing new life into the fs700, but fs7 was already in the pipeline.

ps: all this is speculation and opinion of course :)
