C100: Canon C100 Mark II Announced 60P, New VF, & New OLED Panel Texas Media Systems

Can you set a single XLR mic input to record to both left and right audio channels at different levels? Another basic feature which should have been on the original C100. It says on the B&H specs, "Separate controls for internal and externally connected microphones". Not sure if that means anything.

And can the Viewfinder Magnification be magnified more than the original C100?

+1 for single mic split to two separate tracks

+1 for magnification working via the HDMI out to an ext monitor

If so I hope that feature can be disabled via menu - the last thing I want is for video village to freak out every time I check focus. I actually really like that the magnify doesn't affect the SDI out on the C300 - the onboard monitors I use have their own magnify feature and I prefer to use that.

I guess Canon have partly addressed this point with the higher quality onboard LCD - many of us have struggled with external monitors like the Ninja Blade not having focus punch in - especially not from the handy button on the side grip.

Ben.

Do you still shoot the C-series or move over to GH4 only?

I'm a huge fan of the C300, & even with the release of the Amira, feel it's still the finest documentary camera available. But it's been a rental as I didn't buy-in due to the lack of slomo.

I use the GH4 because it's a hybrid & very stealthy. A C300, & 5D3, plus some EF lenses, draws a lot more attention from border control, or security services, than a pair of GH4(s) with some m43 glass.

Another feature that will be useless to most, but I might utilize, is FTP. For security reasons I sometimes travel without a computer but still need to get footage back home ASAP.

The C100 Mark II features wireless control and file-transfer capability. This enables remote control via smartphone or computer, and direct to FTP transfer of files.

That's actually an amazing feature that is sure to be used by this camera's intended customers - professionals working in the field - and sure to be overlooked/misunderstood/poo-pooed by the internet amateurs screaming about how Canon has lost it.

This camera looks to be a very welcome refresh to the C100 - it will sell. As will the updated Canon cinema cameras that are sure to follow and outsell all the Sonys and Panasonics.

Not to read too much into it but B&H lists the C300 as unreturnable.

B&H has always had the C300 as unreturnable. I asked them about it, about a year ago when I was in the store. The sales guy said it was a "Canon requirement". Which is questionable because other dealers like AbelCine do not have that policy.

I just wanted my C300 to have slow motion in 1080. Now the C100 II does that. Canon removed lot of irritants from the C100 in this Mark II version. This camera will take off from C100 as a no nonsense workhorse. People would have been happy if it had 4K. So some of them will blast Canon and buy a GH4, some will only blast Canon and not buy anything, and some others will wait for the ultimate camera to be launched. However, this camera will sell a lot and you will see many good films with this camera apart from the events and other work.

People shouldn't go by the marketing hype. Anyone remember Nov 2011? The amount of bashing Canon got for the C300 specs was amazing. There were talk of how Canon lost the fist fight on Nov 3rd 2011. At the end it is the Canon C300 which sold by truckloads.

Let us not get into juvenile manhood contests based on spec sheets. As working professionals earning livelihood from this we have to evaluate each camera strictly based on "needs" and not "wants". Remember our want is infinite. The fact is there will never be any ultimate camera. Everything will continue to evolve. So we need to decide whether the current package is good for us now and for how long will it give us the returns. How soon will I recover the cost of the camera and make money. Which camera will need "X" months and which camera will need "Y" months to recover the investment.... We have to be a bit cold blooded in doing calculations about our investments in equipment. (Once I told one of my friends to buy two studio apartments and rent it out to make money than buying one house. He calculated and realised that investing in a bigger house won't give him better returns.) We have to also calculate the total cost of camera, media, battery, new rigs for the new camera, upgrading editing suite to make it 4k ready etc etc.

Canon will launch some good stuff.

PS: We ought to be passionate about our subject and hopefully in creating art. Unfortunately too often we become more passionate about our equipment.

It was always B&H policy for these cameras, else instead of renting a camera people will get it from B&H on the pretext of buying and then return.

Thanks Jon.

We need your type around here so hope you chime in more often. Hope all's been well!

CANON, I'M PISSED.
Not because you updated an already fine camera. Totally legit. Maybe I get one.
No, I recently paid 400€ to get the DPAF, which is nice but limited and doesn´t offer face recognition or off center placement.
Sth other manufacturers put in their 500€ stills cameras...

Canons official statement ...." Haha! We got you."

I'm interested in both Canon's, & Sony's offerings, but see them in different roles.

I don't like dressing-up Canon's motion cameras & prefer these stripped down as much as practical. I mostly hold the C300 in front of me without additional support so it can move quickly & freely.

Alternatively Sony adopts the Cat-on-the-Shoulder form factor. Many advantages to this style too, including being better suited to getting all dolled up as a production cam when needed.

Zach Zamboni has an excellent article about the difference in form factor.

Could be great for those of us who missed the first incarnation. I waited and waited and waited (and pleaded with reps for info) for a Canon to release an S35 camera in that price point.....I finally purchased an FS100. Could not wait any longer.

Anyways...a few years later and here we are. I am very interested in the MK2. I'll gladly sell off my FS100/metabones and keep my Canon lenses in the workflow. Someone mentioned being over the form factor of the FS700....I was never wowed & would love to move on.

Meh! A good solid update... that Canon really should have delivered a year ago! There's a lot to love about the cX00 range of cameras (I've owned two of them), but with other manufacturers coming out with some interesting solutions that attempt to creatively meet the needs of customers, Canon seems to be stuck it it's belief that the customers are probably wrong if they want anything that Canon doesn't offer.

Hmm... Just checked AbelCine's site and they now say, "non-returnable." That's actually a change from previously. I had a bought a C100 from them at one point, it had issues from the get-go with the chip and I was able to return it - no questions asked.
