C100: Canon C100 Mark II Announced 60P, New VF, & New OLED Panel Texas Media Systems

I use both the C300 and C100 and I have to say the C300 kills the shooting experience of the C100. I love the image of both cameras but I always struggle with the EVF and LCD on the C100. Having the user experience upgraded to the same one as the C300 is a big deal. Add in the Duel Pixel and face detection AF plus a better image with the new processor does make this a tempting upgrade. It's priced right.

Add a Ninja Star for a better codec and you are set. Of course this is an HD camera and yes the industry is all about 4K and I like 4K. Especially because the GH4 does it so well with a very efficient codec but most dont need that resolution and the GH4 looks as good as the C100 does when down converting.

Only thing is you have the workarounds of a camera thats a hybrid. Audio and micro HDMI.

Sure I wish the C1000 Mark II was 4K but it's priced really well for a HD camera and it has features other cameras don't. You run and gun Movi/glidecam guys wont have the Duel Pixel with the FS7.

Lots to think about but I want to try the new C100 Mark II out. It's not off the list.

I want one. Might sell one of my C100s to be replaced by this.

Can you set a single XLR mic input to record to both left and right audio channels at different levels? Another basic feature which should have been on the original C100. It says on the B&H specs, "Separate controls for internal and externally connected microphones". Not sure if that means anything.

And can the Viewfinder Magnification be magnified more than the original C100?

I'm considering replacing my FS700R with one of the revised Cinema Eos bodies coming next year if their specs are decent enough to warrant the jump. This update is concerning though. It's great that they've updated the EVF and onboard monitor, but at $6000USD, it's competing against the FS700R - and in my opinion, it just doesn't weigh up against its features or expandability.

I really want to like it, but they've kinda just released 2011's FS100 with this camera, and even that was cheaper than this body.

Looking forward to seeing what they deliver with the C300II and C500II. Not looking forward to the RRP of those cams though.

Those who were happy with the C100 and C300 will be happy with the C100mk2. Those who thought those were overpriced and underspecced with respect to the competition will also think so about this mk2. Count me in with the latter.

Canon are the Apple of video cameras!!

It seems really more than anything that they've just annoyed existing C series owners ha. As many have said, these are really just features the C100 should have had from the getgo. My C100 has already paid for itself and it wouldn't be a sound investment to upgrade to this, but it certainly addresses most of the issues the C100 has.

No doubt it is a lot more viable of a camera compared to the v1 but imho, it leaves a lot of room for Panasonic to crush with a 10bit 4k AF-200 for $5,000 or under. But the AF-200 would probably be m4/3rds which would add a wrinkle to the direct comparison (outside of the C100 v2 actually existing!)

- Internal 4:2:2 XAVC-S
- 10-bit over HDMI
- SDI

Even without any of the improvements Canon have made here, I think that any one of these features might have been cause for an upgrade. To protect the C300/500, they could have just improved those cameras as well and announced them at the same time. But the fact that they did it this way suggests to me that they still have a significant amount of original stock to sell.

Autofocus Upgrade + VF + Better LCD + 60P might be worth a couple $K for me, the C100 is such a great workflow for us right now, especially with the Ninja Blade. We'll see what the original mk1 will sell for come December. Hoping for 4K like everyone else, but for the day-to-day, nice 1080p does just fine and the C-series images are top notch.

Also:

Central to many of the new features of the new EOS C100 Mark II Digital Video Camera is its advanced Canon DIGIC DV4 image processor. The Canon DIGIC DV4 image processor separates the RGB output from the camera’s 8.3 Megapixel CMOS imager into three individual 8 megapixel signals (as opposed to 2MB in the EOS C100) for noticeably improved image quality. The Canon DIGIC DV4 processor also includes a new debayering algorithm to help minimize moiré and reduce video noise even at high ISO speeds. (high-sensitivity recording on the camera ranges from ISO 320 to 80,000).

Does anyone read 8MP internal as 4K internal? Trolling a bit here...

Yeah thats exaclty what it must mean. Many people thought that canon had invented a new type of sensor with the way they marketed the C300, but they just took the red photosites for the red channel and blue for blue etc instead of debayering.
Now they are doing the oposite and marketing that as a feature instead.
But it does mean they are debayering to quad HD and downscaling to 1080. So the c300 mk2 is likely to be the same camera but it actually alows you to access the 4k.

Providing they dont oversharpen the image by default the debayering should mean that the image is smoother and have less of that oversharp aliasy video look.

To add my own question, they say it does uncompressed output, I take it that will still just be 8 bit?

Tough decisions. So...I fall in the category of being an advocate of the C100. I use lots of different cameras for lots of different jobs....but the C100 is great for a lot of things. The workflow and image are wonderful.

Problem is...for $2500 more...you can get an FS7...which is twice the camera on spec. I just wish Canon would bump the price and give us these features. I love the "fixes" that have been included in this new release...and I am very tempted. OTOH, I am really tempted by the FS7 specs...though admittedly so...I like the image of the C100 much better....so far.

I do mostly one man, run/gun corporate projects. I have resisted jumping off of my FS 700 for a while now.
Having 60 Fps in 1080, a much better functional VF and LCD combined with canon af makes this an absolute no-brainer for me. The form factor of the 700 has just worn me down.

At this price point I can certainly roll this back as a B cam when the C300 is eventually updated with much higher bit rate's and internal 4K. I have to believe that is coming very soon.

Seeing as its just minor updates (things that should have been fixed for vrs 1) on the C100II I wouldn't expect big changes to the C300II as the C300I still sells well and this seems to me as a time minding thing. If there are massive changes I could see a new name set (C200/400/600) and I could see it being teased at NAB and available next fall. Who knows for sure but that is the impression I get from this announcement.

Canon has to have 4K cameras in the Sub $15K range coming the question is how long?

I'll definitely be buying one, probably as soon as possible. But only because I was already planning on buying a second C100 within the next 6 months or so anyway. I'm not sure it's worth replacing a current C100 with a MkII, but at this point I don't know why one would buy a MkI over a MkII.

It will cost a lot more. Media is very expensive for the FS7. A 64GB QDS64/T XQD Memory Card from Sony cost $300. In 4K thats not going to give you much. You will need several so minimum an extra $1K for media.

This is a very good point. I also prefer Canon's color science over Sony so it does lean me towards staying in the Canon ecosystem.

zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

Looks like they fixed the things that cheaped out on the original (no 60p,VF & EVF). Suprised they didn't nudge the codec along a little. low bitrate AVCHD meh.

Looks like my decision to go with an FS7 is sound.

Fs7 sound almost like double price... $5500 vs $8000!

Some nice improvements. Gives me hope for a C300 II. I hope they announce one soon as I've grown tired of the C100 and don't want to move to Sony. Fs7 specs blow this away for not a whole lot more.

Not to read too much into it but B&H lists the C300 as unreturnable.
