C100: Canon C100 Mark II Announced 60P, New VF, & New OLED Panel Texas Media Systems

Well guys.. I know ive been bashing the mk II here but I was going to get the autofocus upgrade for my c100 might as well just go for the new one. Anyone want to buy a 4 month old c100 with like 4 or less hours of recording!? lol.

Only really for short shots. They're "box" cameras, not "cat" cameras, designed for your arms to hold all the weight in space vs. being supported by your body via draping over a shoulder. Works for some things, but in many situations a C-camera still very much benefits from rigging.

Exatly +1. Its not an ideal long form documentary camera by any means, and the C300 is heavier and just strains the heck out of yr arms.shoulders/back without a rig.

Im now not ready to jump ship to the FS7 as Im still reading complaints about the ergonomics of the FS7 and its awkward SmartGrip....sounds like you need long slender fingers to effectively use it. Otherwise it ends up being frustrating for long from hand held wotk which is my main bread n butter hence the now dislike of the C100/300 without a rig.

Eric, you need a YAAAGH! Said with a sly grin <8-)

Grant

I already have one. Wink! It actually works very well and solves a few problems namely audio in and video out. Oh yeah thats exactly what it's for! LOL! I've been using three GH4's in a on going project. The YAGH GH4 is the main camera for all audio and the two others are for cutaways and broll. As you can see I do have an actual audio guy :-D He like the YAGH. Go figure....

so is the 35mbps only on 60p, i cannot select the 35mbps to shoot 24? well if thats the case then this completely deal breaker for me.

I'm a lot more interested in actual 25p than 35Mbps - tired of handing off footage and having to email a "how to conform PsF" guide as soon as I get home.

No 30p, though? That's just bizzare.

C100 Mark II Frame Rates

AVCHD
1920 x 1080p: 59.94. 50, 23.98
1920 x 1080i: 59.94, 50
1920 x 1080PF: 29.97, 25

MP4
1920 x 1080p: 59.94, 50, 29.97, 25, 23.98
1280 x 720p: 29.97, 25, 23.98
640 x 360p: 29.97, 25, 23.98

Eric but the 35 mbps is only on 59.94p I cant choose higher bit rate in 24p. To me that was the selling point since it gets a little closer to the current c300. Now im just staying with my camera wait till the c300 drops in price when it successor comes out and then buy that instead. Im ok with 1080p but at least give me higher bit rate internally.

From Canon
The EOS C100 Mark II offers more recording options than ever before so that you can get the look you need. The widely used AVCHD codec allows recording to SD card at up to 28Mbps, whilst a new MP4 mode offers data rates of up to 35Mbps for outstanding quality. Both codecs can be used at up to 1080/60p and the MP4 mode offers extended slow and fast motion options.

Seems like if you want MP4 at 35Mbps 60p you can have it.

I dont know if 60p with HDMI out is possible.

I found this
Recording frame rateAVCHD: 59.94 Hz(NTSC) MODE. 28Mbps: 59.94P. 24/17/7Mbps: 59.94i/PF29.97/23.98P
50.00 Hz mode (PAL) MODE. 28Mbps:50.00P. 24/17/7Mbps:50.00i/PF25

MP4: 59.94 Hz(NTSC) MODE. 35Mbps:59.94P. 29.97P/23.98P: 24/17/7/4/3 Mbps
50.00 Hz mode (PAL) MODE. 35Mbps: 50.00P. 24/17/7/4/3 Mbps:25.00P

It states 23.976 at 35Mbps with MP4.

mmmm I think either i am looking at this wrong or you are because this is what i see it saying (ill break it down by the periods since it makes less confusing):

"MP4: 59.94 Hz(NTSC) MODE.

35Mbps:59.94P.

29.97P/23.98P: 24/17/7/4/3 Mbps"

Which means:

MP4: 59.94hz which is NTSC MODE you can record to 35Mbps:59.94fps. (notice the periods here). Then if you want 29.97fps and 23.98 these can be recorded at 24,17,7,4, and 3 Mbps. So no 35mbps at 23.98

Update!: B&H replied to my tweet and it confirms what I was saying:

You can load luts on C100II? That is a nice added feature over vrs 1 .

They didn't mention loading them so no I don't think you can load separate luts for viewing or recording. It simply has two built-in, one is C-LOG to Rec.709 and Wide DR to Rec.709, these can be applied for vieweing on the on board screen and also to the HDMI signal, which is to be used for monitoring (it would be stupid to record the lut to an external recorder!). I think it's a nice feature. I've always hated monitoring the c100 with an external device, and I use C-log 100% of the time so very hard to judge anything, especially exposure, so I end up reverting to the on board display for exposure which has view assist. Having a rec.709 hdmi signal while recording Log is a very nice and well thought-out feature, for both setting exposure/focus and for client/director monitors.

Visible difference between 24 and 35mbps is going to be fairly nil anyways correct?

The purpose of 35mbps is to maintain the 24mbps quality, even if you increase frames per second.

The bitrates are time based, not frame based. Shooting 60fps at 24mbps would be a significant downgrade compared to let say 25fps at the same bitrate.
