C100: Canon c100 m2 vs FS5 picture quality difference?

I have a different take on this issue and it has to do with the availability of the Sony's 28-135mm zoom. If Canon doesn't come out with a C100 Mk3 at NAB I'll probably go Sony ASAP.

I had a disaster Tuesday at 11PM while on the road, I will report on it Monday when I get the C100 back from Canon repair. Basically the C100 bricked and I went into crisis mode, luckily rented a FS5 by midnight for the next day's b-roll shooting. Never laid hands on one before but WOW! The ability to change focal lengths while keeping both hands where they are is amazing! Although the lens is neither wide or tele enough, the convenience of being able to zoom and not have to worry if it stays in focus reminds me of ENG rigs or models like an EX3. This alone is enough to make me go 5 or 7 although it's against my nature to buy so close to NAB. As to colorimetry, that's for the post geeks. I can provide better footage, more shots and angles to them and there's no way I can afford a Cabrio.

The C100 is 3 years old now, it won't be a fair comparison until the C100 MKIII specs are announced,
and even then not until we get them in hand as the Cinema EOS line usage always seem to outperform the on-paper specs.

The C100 Mark II is only 1 year old.

It is possible to get a full set of Canon zoom lenses that are parfocal. Heck, even the 18-135 stm maintains focus if you zoom slow enough. My 70-200 2.8 II is parfocal, but I had to add some shims to the mount. The 16-35 and 24-70 mk1 are generally parfocal. 24-105 is parfocal. The new 18-135 is going to have that strange zoom controller if that matters. The sigma 1.8 zooms are parfocal. There are options available for native EF lenses that are much cheaper than the 28-135 Sony.

Sorry, but some people in this thread are nuts. C100 colors are pretty pleasing for sure, but it's not hard to get great colors out of the FS5 or especially the FS7. Slog3 is pretty much plug and play with a LUT, and on the FS7 you can actually monitor or burn in the LUT while you're shooting.

Colors are every bit as good in this mode as the C100 or C300 - I've owned both. Canon has the upper hand on white balancing - but C100 file is paper thin. I've never had issues pushing the 10 bit codec on FS5, and with FS7 you can push whole stops while still keeping a fat clean image. C300 was better than the C100 and I'm sure C300mkii is fantastic (haven't used it.)

Also, EOSHD is not even a remotely reliable source. His posts are anecdotal and usually contradictory. He also only really shoots for fun, which is fine, but his opinion is not nearly as informed as other blogs out there.

Lastly, WRT the Alexa comparisons... c'mon. C100 to Alexa comparison is beyond ludicrous.

The absurd hyperbole driven by blinkered fanboyism do people no favours. It's one thing to say one has a preference for Canon colours out of the box but to suggest that Sony's colours are somehow fixed is ridiculous especially when most people will be shooting SLog3 with a choice of two wide gamuts and from that starting place any reasonable look can be achieved through LUTs or grading. Personally I find the Canon look rather insipid and cannot understand the fawning over that it receives and I much prefer the Sony broadcast look.

The trump card of both the FS5 and the FS7 is the E Mount giving an almost unlimited lensing choice. I love that I am not limited in what brand, type or age of lens I can use on my FS7 and I can go from modern sharp glass for very corporate pieces to 40+ year old Nikkor manual glass for less clinical, more emotive feels or even some special effect looks from old Russian glass. I am amassing such a lot of different lenses for different looks I'm going to find it difficult to move away from the E Mount system.

Is Sony throwing out cameras into the market hoping to have a hit? I don't know if the FS7 is considered a 'hit' but Sony couldn't meet demand up to a year after it was released so chances are they are doing something right.

Hi Cpreston,

I meant that the Sony has a Servo zoom lens and I have missed that ever since I bought the AF100 and C100. For run 'n gun b-roll or documentary shooting it is a real plus!

You can use both your Nikkor and Russian lenses on Canon.

No serious movie is shot on Sony F anyway, against a very large number of high budget movies shot with Canon Cinema cameras, and that means something.
Which planet are you from again?

Posts like this make me wonder if some "positive review agencies" have gone overboard again.

I'm a Canon user, but if I have to read one more time "Sony just has those awful Sony colors", I'm gonna ****ing kill the internet.
Seriously: Get a life.
