C100: Canon C100 handle/grip issue..Faulty grip or faulty camera body?

So I just purchased the C100 a week ago and have owned it for 3 days now. The first day I took it out of the box and it worked great, I was able to figure my way through the camera and it was a breeze to get the hang of it. I quickly found where it was better than the fs100, which I owned previously. Yesterday I went to test it out, since I have to shoot on actual jobs (today, and this entire weekend). I went out to the woods with a friend of mine to film him climbing. I went to set up the camera normally, first plug in the wire on the grip/ screw on the grip, then put the top handle on. Whenever I went to do this and turned on the camera I noticed that the record button, magnification button and f-stop worked fine but the joystick did not work at all (which controls iso, shutter speed, white balance and also go through the entire menu... There is no possible pay to change those or go through the menu at all without the hand grip (which I feel is a complete flaw on Canons end).

So after turning the camera off, checking if there was any dirt on the wire to the hand grip, taking the battery out, resetting the camera as well. It still did not work. The store I bought it from was nice enough to walk me through the process of checking off what it wasn't, as was Canon when I called them as well. The store was also nice enough to send a replacement handle and over night it to me so I should have it within 2 hours (which is great because I have a shoot today at 4:00 PM).

Continuing on, After speaking to Canon, as well as someone at the camera shop, it could be the actual receiving end in the camera. Now I will only know when the new handle comes to me but I just wanted to see if anyone has had this issue? It was really not too cool to find out, I am really happy I found it before I was on a larger project and had to rely on the camera completely. Kind of a bummer to realize that the connection between camera body and grip is that fidgety and possibly that sensitive (as they say a little dirt can disrupt the connect, which is understandable).

I feel that after paying $6k and up for a camera, that piece should be as strong as the C100's top handle/ audio plug where it plugs in and doesn't lose connection. I also am a little upset that the camera body itself doesn't have a joystick built in to it. I feel like the camera body should do what the handle does as well. If a handle goes wrong or the connection between body and handle goes wrong, there is literally no way of working some very crucial settings!
Even the Sony fs100 has buttons all over the camera.... I realize each camera has its things good and bad, and this is most likely (hopefully) just a fluke in part which happens but if it were to happen again, I would have to consider moving to a camera like the FS700..... which I really like the Canon C100/300 so it would be a shame.

All in all, thank you to camera stores that actually listen to their customers and help out, as well as Canon for talking me through what to do. Hopefully this new handle fixes the issue. Let me know if anyone else has had this issue at all and how it was resolved. Canon said 90% of the cases, the wire isn't plugged in the whole way (I checked mine and it certainly was), the other 5% is handle issue, other 5% is the camera body issues....

So yep thats my story.

Hope all goes well with the replacement body. Keep us posted on what happens and the actual issue. C100 will probably be my next purchase (waiting for NAB announcements). Just recently sold my Panasonic AF100. If nothing noteworthy coming from Panasonic, I'm next in line for a C100. I'll be at the Canon Hollywood event on Tuesday.

Try change your glass on C100 (dirty connector can cause a malfunction of the camera).
I have no problem with grip and I don't hear about this problem from other people.

Same issue here. It happened yesterday for a few minutes. I could record and magnify but control pad stopped responding. I had to remove handle and reattach AND turn the camera on and off and the function returned. So far I can't duplicate. Biggest problem was that it happened in the middle of a shoot.

I mounted my handle and have yet to remove it. It fits in the Pelican 1510 with the handle on. No problems at all.

This is a "rite of passage" on the camera and it happened to me with our demo camera....I think most every C300 owner has had it happen to them. The cable from the handle was not all the way into the hole on the camera. You really have to get the feel of the last little bit as you push it in. I was so sure I had it right and it was all the way in, that I ran in to the Canon Hollywood office to show them a "defective" C300PL.....they, of course, pulled the plug out and put it back in and Presto! ...everything worked....I swore I had it right!...but I didn't.

After purchasing the C100, this is exactly how I'll handle the issue (mount it and forget it)!

@ntouched , would you mind sharing how you pack your C100 in your pelican case?

thank you

I assume you're asking me krick. Probably giving away some secrets here but this is my Pelican carry on:

I took the NTG-2 out so you could better see inside. I carry tripod, green screen, stands, prompter, etc. in a checked Pelican 2950. It's heavy, but I'm an old guy and can still drag it all through airports. I carry on my Lenovo laptop/CS6 editing machine in it's case and check my personal stuff (clothes, some extra audio stuff- DAR, XLR-Pro, etc., Leatherman's tool) in one of two duffel bags (a big one when I'm carrying the prompter and a smaller one when I'm not).

In my early C300 days my handle stopped working only to realise as Jim mentions above whilst I thought Id got it all the way in, it actually wasnt. A quick unscrew, a firm final push and 0 issues. Then again if it hadnt, I was still good as the C300 has 3 joysticks.

Double check it Cory, if you havent already. If the issue is with the camera - first one Ive heard doing this.

I also had a (brief) issue with the hand grip / joystick.....reseating the plug quickly solved the problem. I think it even says something about this in the manual; I remember reading it in the Canon literature about the C100 somewhere.

The bigger issue to me, is that with the lack of a joystick on the camera itself, there is no way to control something like ISO, without it. There are button presets for iris + / -; but no way to control ISO without the joystick. A bit of a bummer, because if you want to take the handgrip and top handle off the camera, as to lessen the weight of it to put it on a jib or glide cam, there is no way to control ISO. I spoke with the EOS help line folks and they said they would pass the idea on to the powers that be.....maybe we will see something as a firmware update in future. I hope so.

I have an FS100. How do you like the C100 in comparison, and where was it better/worse than the FS100? I like the form factor and ND filter wheel on the C100, but the EVF looks really bad.
