C100: Canon C100 film by stillmotion: Pulse

Okay, felt they were selling the 'product' a bit heavily by the end, but, LORD, that camera is exquisite! I'll be honest, I was expecting very little from the C100, just thought it would be the typical less for less selling philosophy from Canon these days, but in fact this may be the camera I've been waiting for.

The thing with the C100 is that it is a very unsexy camera...

...because everything for the last 6 months has been about FPS or resolution or what not.

And then it kind of dawns on you what the C100 is: it's basically a brilliant HD image packed in a shooting ready, ergonomic, portable package that records to dirt cheap media and has a battery that lasts a long time.

It checks the all the boxes like NDs and picture profiles and clean output (10 bit would have been nice, and needless to say the C300 would have to have this too) and it has some great assist features that make it shooting friendly.

With the price point down from 8k to $6499, Canon has gotten a lot of things right with this camera. It's already really great as it is, but as I wrote somewhere else: had they included 1080@60p with the same IQ, they would have had a new sensation on their hands.

I think the lack of 60p is one of the only things seriously causing many to step back a bit in this camera.

The C100 looks good in this piece. I agree about frame rates. The lack of over cranking is a bummer. Yesterday on my shoot the director ask me to go 48 and when I told him I cant he look at me with a what?

read somewhere that the 1080/60p issue can be added via firmware, what are the chances canon does this?

It might be possible down the road, but don't hold your breath.

It's hard to say what can or can't be done. The C300 doesn't have it (720p doesn't count, I'm talking about the real, non-scaled image).

If enough C300 owners give Canon grief for the C100 being too good, they might give the C300 1080p60 first. But then we know the C100 can do it as well.

It feel like one of those things that Canon gives us when the camera has had its time...

I like what they achieved with this piece, but the behind the scenes is nothing more that a sales pitch that I found to be a little disingenuous.

Loving the C100's size and ergonomics, the image it produces is really promising...

Has Canon ever added a frame rate option before with a firmware update? 5D2 got 24p and manual audio, but it wasn't until the 5D3 that it got 720p60.

In my mind it's in the cards—as in doable. But not likely.

And if it comes, it won't happen now as the camera is peaking.

I'd been sworn to secrecy....Last Saturday at our C100 seminar, the film was shown on a 15' screen and it looked great. They used the wide DR and the 70+ attendees were quite impressed. People that worked on the shoot were there to share their experiences shooting with the camera.....that's all I can say at this point.
