C100: Canon C100 Auto Focus demo video with Joe Simon

Nice video. This is really something as a documentaryfilmaker!

Anyone knows when it´s availeble? I´m going to Ghana 3 marts, and hope to my camera upgraded before?

Nice examples. Since this upgrade is already in the hands of some people, any idea what's causing the delay for the rest of us?

Canon is usually pretty spot on about product and firmware ETAs.

Delays at this stage are usually due to last minute bugs that get reported by beta testers.

I'm guessing Canon will start accepting C100s for upgrades next week.

Great video!

Any comment on how loud the auto focus is with the 24-105? Will a shotgun mic be usable for sound with it on?

I assume the upgrade involves actually replacing the sensor. One of the big draws to this camera is the "4K sensor", the same as in the C300 and C500, which presumably downscales the 4k image to 1080HD.....(or am I wrong)? If going ahead with the upgrade means swapping out the sensor, will the new sensor be capable of the same resolution (and image)?

And an aside.....with all the 4k hoo-hah playing out on camera-fan sites all over the internet, I wonder what firmware upgrade cards Canon still have up their collective sleeves, in front of NAB.....? IF the sensor really is 4k capable.....then.......????

I think we have it on Canon's authority that the sensor is NOT replaced. There needs to be some engineer-activty to get it all lined up, but you keep the sensor.

Yes, it's a 4K sensor, but it's specifically downsampled so even after debayering, you're getting the sort of detail you'd get from a traditional 3-CCD block. To use it at 4K would kinda 'undo' the magic smoke we're getting where every HD pixel is made up of 2 green, 1 blue and 1 red pixels from the sensor. If I had to trade one iota of the current picture quality for swanky AF, no deal. But I'm lead to believe that the main cost is for manpower to fettle your system rather than pay for new sensors or licensed software. Hence, this is and will remain an elective upgrade.

Thanks Matt for the useful reply. I've been following your blog, too...a lot of good stuff there for C100 fans. I hope you'll keep it going.

Very impressive performance. This is going to make the event shooters very happy and practically a must upgrade.

Nice! Any idea what the turn around time would be? Would love to have this in time for the upcoming wedding season.

Is the focus point adjustable? I could see this very useful for interviews, just stick the focus point on the subjects face and not worry about refocusing all the time when they lean forward or back.

It's too bad that it's only the center. I really wish it was adjustable like the magnification. I rarely center my subject in the frame...
