Canon announces EOS 80D

Groundbreaking only if it got internal 4K. If true, I am willing to pay another $500 more on top of the list price

More people blown away by these impressive specs on this thread.

Most video-centric sites aren't even covering the launch yet, that's how low Canon has fallen thanks to its strategy of "pay 10 times more and get a proper camera".

It's ridiculous. Not even the 7DII has 4K. They're lucky to have a great brand positioning.

No 4k. My 70D is a moire monster. My two basic requirements at this age and time "No Moire and 4k video". No need to investigate the moire in the 80D I guess. Canon you just lost a customer. Now it's going to be either Panasonic, Sony or maybe even Nikon once tests come out for the D500. If you have not worked with the 70D here is a video frame grab, now visualize that at 24 or 30 fps.

I guess Canon hasn't lost enough market share to Sony yet to force them to change their camera release process.

It's a shame bc I loved my Canon workflow, but would rather have the features that Sony isn't afraid to implement into their camera bodies. My 70D is my "D" cam and I rarely use it, but I'll be replacing it w/the A6300.

So. I was wondering what you guys thought. I remember around a decade ago when the DVX100 was around $3500 the Canon XL2 was selling for over $6000. I later remember the price dropping about half as HD started making serious ground, but still...wow.
I'm not saying the Canon cameras don't make good images, but it seems they charge a PREMIUM. In addition to the hefty prices, are incrementally slow in advancing features. I've followed the C100, C300 and various other camers through the years as well. Is this correct or am I off base here?

To the credit of Canon the 70D was a huge leap in technology with the dual pixel continuous focusing system and touch screen. It's also very silent with an STM lens. Canon did great except they crippled the camera with moire. It's a huge problem I face with the 70D indoors and outdoors, it really deserves the name of "Moire King". If Canon was to add 4k to the C100 at current pricing I would buy one. If Canon releases a 5D Mark IV without 4k it will be like committing suicide. It's like saying you want 4k in DSLR then wait three more years for the next release and Maybe you will get it. I for one will not pay the same price for a 1080p camera that is going to be obsolete in a year or two when that same money can buy me a 4k future proof camera. Sony and Panasonic also have Zebra, Focus Peaking and more.

I'm sure that this will be fine with some folks and that's fair enough.
Just my opinion here, ...but I'm disgusted. It's not that this isn't a valid product, .....its the arrogance that they can continue to NOT DELIVER 4K where their competitors (Sony, Nikon, Panasonic) are all doing so routinely. Again...I get it. They don't HAVE to include 4K....no issue. I just don't buy the product....that's my punishment to them. I'm just one guy and they don't care. I wonder how long they can laaaag behind their competitors and NOT lose more customers.

Oh...ps....I own a Sony A6000 and have been debating on 4K from FZ1000, FZ300, LX100, G7, RX100 IV, and now the A3000. So many choices....none of which are manufactured by Canon.

The new AF looks interesting but kind of a let down in almost every other area.

1080p max? Is this 2010?

HD will be around for a while yet mate, better get used to it. Many countries still broadcast 480i/576i.....don't run before you can walk.

I keep seeing these kinds of posts defending Canon's lack of 4k w/their DSLR line. Nothing you said is a logical counterpoint.

Shooting 4k enhances the HD workflow, and provides more options in post-production. Whether you personally like it or not, it's become the new standard in basic camera specs. My phone shoots 4k, my OSMO, Phantom 3Pro, FS7 and GoPro shoot 4k. If I'm buying a $1200 camera, you can bet I'm going to want 4k as an option.

Re: "don't run before you can walk" I shoot 4k all the time, for professional productions, commercials, broadcast TV and it's become essential for my workflow. You may not have gotten there yet, but please don't presume to know how others operate.

Also, these types of comments contribute little to a productive conversation. Do you actually want manufacturers to quit innovating? Why? And if so, what are you doing poking around in a camera specs thread? Just go out and play w/your HD toys and be content.

True. Just change "HD" for "SD" and "4K" for "HD" and we're back to 2007 in this conversation.

Don't like it? Don't buy it. Go buy another camera with 4K marketing on it. Sony has how many? How many of the Sony's have some people bought? All of them? There are still more hobbyist that buy cameras for still picture taking than there are videographers throughout the world. Lot's of people that I show any of my 4K cameras to and say, "It's shoots 4K" look at me like I'm from deep space. I have to explain what 4K is to them. Some of them respond, "Like playstation"?

4K isn't as popular as people think here.

Party like it's 2011. Canon thinks that 1080p/60 is what everybody looking for a cheap DSLR to shoot video wants in 2016. At this rate, the 90D will have 4K upon release in 2019. At least there is a new Sony 4K camera coming out next week , hehe
