Canon announces 24P for the 5D Mark II at HD Expo

I went to the Createasphere HD Expo in Burbank last week (November 4-5). They had a Canon intensive seminar specifically about the 7D, 5D MkII, and 1D MkIV which I attended. Lots of good test footage and Q&A's. -The low light sensitivity on the 1D MkIV was insane, and it was only a prototype :)
But the really cool news is that Canon announced a firmware update for the 5D MkII that will let it shoot 24P in 1080. They said it should be out early 2010, so I would imagine about the same time as NAB.
Good News!!!

Early 2010? I still don't understand why it's going to take another 3+++ months. I could really use this firmware update NOW!

Canon announced a little while back, it'll be out in first half of 2010. So, it could be until the end of June. Thats anywhere of 8 months away in worst case scenario.
Hopefully sooner, but who knows.

heres a question does the 5d loose any quality from converting the footage from 30p->24p? Cuz if not, then why is it such a big deal. The images are awesome, just shoot, and conform later, or am I not understanding correctly.

I mean yeah it adds one more step in post, but hey so does downloading the footage in the first place.

1) No 30p to 24p method is perfect. There will always be occasional artifacts.
2) The really high quality methods all take an obscene amount of rendering time, even on very powerful machines. Expect a conversion of several minutes of footage to take several hours.

Conversion methods have been discussed to death in this forum, at cinema5D, and presumably also DV Info Net.

Of course 30p to 24p loses quality. How could that ever be a perfect process?

:bath:

umm i think the firmware update will change the internal clock to 24hertz, not do an in cam 30-24 conversion.

J. Odoms couldn't understand why the firmware update would be a big deal because he didn't realize why a post-production conversion from 30p to 24p would so problematic.

We were responding to that, not saying that the firmware would do in-camera frame rate conversion.

Ok so I get it now, that makes more sense why so many 5D owners kicked and screamed at Canon for the update. i just didn't see why it was such a huge deal since you seemingly were able to turn the 5D 30p footage into 24p, just took an extra step. But all-in-all I think still with it's soon to be resolved 30p hickup the image quality of the 5D is superior to the 7D's. I don't know it just has a certain "BITE" to it, wheras the 7D, just doesn't. But I digress........

Thanks guys for helping me get the BIG PICTURE, and I'll possibly own a 5D soon enough, unless RED has some great time line up their sleeves for the Scarlet release. I not I'll stick with my 7D, and shoot, and shoot, and shoot some more until they drop it.

Lets guess... Because this is film making forum? And films are made in 23.976 fps ?
Most complaints to canon was from film makers about 24p,regular "john brown" customer dont care about this or 60i 60p or 30 whatever... he just shoots holiday vids

Does anyone know if

Does anyone know if

The h264 remains as the recording format or does QT mov. replace it?

It already is in MOV container and h264 codec, they could give it higher bitrate tho if theyre gonna release firmware, best option would be manual bitrate.

" Early 2010? I still don't understand why it's going to take another 3+++ months."

That could be just over 6 weeks away:) And it's, supposedly a free update;), and...it's COMING!!! Good Lord...how can you complain even a little bit???

You bought the camera KNOWING it didn't have 24p, right? Canon is gifting you, me, and every other owner of the camera one HELL of a gift! Seriously! Completely out of line to "complain" about their timeline to give you a gift;)
