canon A1 and macbook monitoring

i am thinking about this combo. since the marshal is the same price as the laptop. Is there a delay in the monitoring. if so is there a way to monitor using a different connection than firewire or a converter, etc. Im not so interested in capturing just monitoring.
 
There's a delay because of the GOP and DIGIC processing, particularly in frame mode. It's a very slight delay in the analog component output which your Marshall would display, but the laptop would show a delay of 1-2 seconds. Has to do with the processing overhead, I believe. You can monitor all sorts of stuff with the laptop but timing a focus pull with it ain't one of them.

Ultimately you would want both items, not one or the other.
 
I'd be worried whether the shared memory and MB graphics card would be up to live monitoring. (Though I'm not sure how much better a MB Pro would be) Probably you'd be OK for a mobile cutting station, but, yeah I'd imagine any delay for focus pulling would be intolerable...
