Canon 8D

Hi friends,

I'm about to go and purchase a Canon 7D for film purpose. But I'm kind of late to the game and fearing that the 8D will be announced one day after I purchased the 7D.

Do you think it's a good bet to order the 7D now, or should I wait for the follow up camera?

Thanks

That's true, but I'm afraid I might miss out on some awesome new features. Of course this is very speculative, and the we don't know any details yet.

Well, you can continually wait until the "next best thing"...which is always coming down the pipeline, or you can get a 7D now and start shooting. Your choice.

here's my advice:

if you have to worry (as in you cant afford to buy BOTH) there is very little that an 8D could reasonably do that YOU would actually NEED over a 7D.

for an average pro, semi-pro or hobbyist. who is as concerned with their bank account as their gear (which most of us here are) about the only serious GAME CHANGING feature in the "next canon" would be to solve the moire/aliasing problems.

and like gary said, regardless of what features an 8D has, its not going to make the 7D any less able.

Is there anything specifically about the 7D that you need for filming? For Canon crop cameras you might consider a 600D or a 60D instead -- these are cheaper and have an articulated screen. Perhaps a hedge against buyers remorse and an easier way in to getting some hands-on experience of DSLR video while we all wait for the next generation of Canon developments in video performance.

* it will probably be called 7D mark 2, and yes, I also think it's around the corner (available this fall?)

* I'd get a 550D/600D/60D and sell it when the new cameras come out (hopefully without line slipping, and if canon wants also with a 10 bit codec): worst case scenario, you spent $300 to rent a very nice camera for 6 months

If you go for the 7D you re already missing many awesome new features...: articulating lcd, manual audio, 3x zoom and of course...the option of magic lantern firmware...
So...my advice is to grab the 600D tomorrow and buy some glass with the rest of the money...

As someone who owns a 7D, that's exactly what I'd recommend.

Even if an 8D/7DmkII was announced today it would be at a higher price than the 7D, would be unavailable for several months, and would most likely not include any major upgrades. We will most likely not see any significant hardware changes (eg Digic V processor) until the flagship 1D/5D lines have been updated.

The only things the 7D has that can't be found on much cheaper models is the weather sealing (which only works effectively if you have all weather sealed lenses anyway... otherwise you still need to run for cover at the slightest hint of rain) and the HD output for using a monitor. Unless you desperately need one of these features, there is no point in getting a 7D over one of the other cameras.

A 60D, 600D or even 550D will get you most of the same features (in some cases more than the 7D has) for a fraction of the price. That will allow you to put money where it really matters: lenses.

Oh yes, the awesome new features that makes last months model totaly redundant. In this age of vapor ware the amazing new features is what puts your money in other peoples pockets.

Really dude, the best new features are your imagination, and that will look amazing even using old technology from like one year ago. A camera is just a tool nothing more.

I had the 550D and now the 60D. No difference in video resolution. If I were you I get a used 550D for the time being and sell it when the new models arrive. Also I shot with a 7D and it had the worst overheating problems of the lot.

If it were me I'd get a 60D instead- the 7D has the better sensor but it's deadly without the moveable screen- IMHO.

I worked with the 7D and 60D and would never choose the 7D over the 60D... I will upgrade to the new 5D full frame when it comes out this fall/next summer! I hope it will fix some issues to make it the perfect video camera... better audio amps, no aliasing, higher bitrate and no time limit! So I would also recommend to get the 60D (or 550D if you want to save more money), familiarize yourself with filming on a Canon DSLR and sell the body when the 5D or 7D mk II comes out!
Or, if you want to wait, it makes sense too! Just be prepared that it could still be a year from now that some of the issues we have with HDSLR's get fixed. Maybe Canon won't fix any of these issues in future releases, who knows....

Of course there'll be always something better but I think right now, after HDSLR's got a big boost from the indyfilm community, the next 5D model has the chance to become THE choice for independant filmmakers (comparable to more expansive solutions like red or even alexa)

I think Canon will always want to leave certain things for higher-end video camera models. Remember, Canon also sells high end pro video equipment as well. They don't want to compete with themselves, and I'm pretty sure they make more money on those.

That being said from what I've heard (rumors mostly), the Digic V chip will address most of the issues people have with the current crop (resolve frames from full sensor instead of skipping lines). It can't come soon enough, IMO. I know a lot of folks in Canon-land are eyeing the GH2 because of its apparent lack of moire and aliasing. The Digic 4 should have been replaced already. I just can't see them dragging this out for another year.
