Hi, im planning to buy a camera, the mostly thing i want to do is motion tracking.

I wonder if canon 7d works for perfect matchmoving, obviusly planning the shot, if so, it will be come in handy for me because im searching for a photo camera too.

If doesnt work, could anybody recommend me a good camera to get nice results at time of matchmoving? my pocket is around $2.000

thanks for reading

I have tried matchmoving with the 7D and its possible but your shots have to be relatively smooth and slow, it also helps to turn the sharpness up on the camera if you don't it becomes harder for you to track your markers. But if your looking to exclusively do VFX work I would recommend getting a camera like the HMC150 or an HM100u.

Hail to the HMC150. I wasn't sure to recommend it since the price is at $3500, but I got two of these puppies always ready to rock. I am starting to move to a more DSLR centric workflow, though, but will most likely always have a traditional camcorder with me at all times.

damn thats really high price for me, cos i live in argentina and here those things are much more expensive because of the taxation

i think ill have to work some years more to buy one of those.

what about the panasonic hdc sd9 3ccd? its cheap and i have heard that 3ccd cameras work good on tracking.

vfx is a $$$ business :(

Yeah, that camera should work. It's really all about the rolling shutter. So if you're planning on doing extensive VFX work, then I would avoid a rolling shutter camera at all costs.

And yeah, it can be a costly business, but you should feel a bit lucky that consumers today can actually get into the VFX business at a reasonable price. 20 years ago you would have been SOL.

I used to shoot VFX shorts on a Canon HV30, not the best solution but it worked and didn't look half bad. Stay away from CMOS cameras though lots of problems for vfx, although look at Andrew Kramer he just shot his most recent short and a few others on the 7D. Take a look at the Canon HF series camcorders lot of bang for the buck!
