Canon 7D with 50mm f/1.2 in low light and shallow DOF

Thanks for the video. I really like that first shot. It all looks clean and sharp - definitely feeling good about the camera. And the fast glass

>And the fast glass

The glass makes a difference. Because I know the place I think also the colors are excellent.

Now I need the top 35mm and 24mm lenses :-)

Tomorrow I try some shots with the new 100mm Macro and my 70200mm f/4 IS.

>what fstop u shooting that at ... f8?

More like f/1.6 - f/2

>any trouble with dropped frames on slow pans?

How can I find out? Some pans look like it though. I thought the pans on the head were quite smooth today but still it does not look smooth in the video. Maybe also wrong shutter speed (I tried to stay at 1/60).

Just curious...as you are shooting with a variety of situations and lenses, have you tried out any extreme telephoto lenses? You, the type many photographers have but which they dont usually make for film/'video? I can imagine some crazy things are possible...

The dof looked too deep for stops close to wide open but I checked the focus marks on my 1.2, you must have been focused very very close to infinity. Good to see your footy tho, all of my 50mm work has been at distances of less than 5 meters. For example here is the dof of 50/1.2 wide open and focused at 50cm – Pink Razor Scooter link

I wonder if he realizes that f 1.2 is the maximum aperture? Some people actually think you get shallow DOF at all apertures. Hello! shots look like f 2.8-5.6 to me.

I'm sure he does. It's hard to tell because he's focused past 5 meters. I did a bunch of GH1 tests with 50mm
f1.2 vs f1.4,
canon FD vs nikon AIS
shooting at f2 and low light wide open. Frames taken from video. All my results are at this thread

(edit: I only link this to illustrate 50mm dof, pixel peeping would be inaccurate as these tests were done for avchd)

I photograph for 35 years. I think I understand this :-).

But I most of the time don't use shallow depth of field because I rarely photograph people.

I'm guessing the lens Uwe shot with is this one LINK (as opposed to canon manual FD's in my post above). And his use of it is more for low light infinity focus rather than dof. Maybe the thread title is slightly inaccurate as dof with this lens is best shown with subjects focused within 5 meters. It's still wonderful seeing footage from the 7D an any regards.

What is involved in using a Canon FD prime on a 7D? Are there issues to consider?

Its a generally unfeasible practice. Without an optical adapter, the lens will only work for extreme macro shots. With an optical adapter, the quality of the extra lens is generally poor, reducing image quality significantly.

Well then you're in bad luck because if you're in a very small room a effective focal length of 50mm won't cover the scene as well.
There is no problem with cameras with APS-C sensors, just mind what lens you put on it!
