Canon 7D vs hacked GH1 w same shots and test chart side by side

yeah i've been watching him too. he's owned all the canons and has used the 7d/5d to shoot all his films but when the hack came out he became a gh1 fanboy because he tested and discovered the resolution and image is far better on gh1.

but still I have to admit gh1 doesn't even come close to 7d on low light. i wish i had a 7d just to shoot low light stuff because i'm really sickened by the FPN in anything with 400-800+ ISO

Just get a 1.3 prime or get the 1.7 pancake lens and you'll be amazed at what you can do.

Oh yeah there is this other neat thing you can get, some lights!

Buy a basic lowel kit 2 totas, one omni, stands gels diffusers umbrellas, a few white bounce boards and some flags, and a few china balls and it's all you'll need for 99.9% of anything. Won't cost you that much either.

That's the beauty of cameras like the GH1 is you can learn lighting as you go because you are not burning money on insane film costs and you can SEE your lighting immediately.

It amazes me that people made movies before computers and video assist almost as much as it amazes me that people built cities and buildings like the empire state building before cad....

just a guy and some pencils and this thing called math.

Nice link. The guys seems good - but he has so many vids up there - what are the tutorial ones you found useful?

Ah yeah - they were pretty basic though - picked up all those tips on this forum already

Yeah... I don't even have my GH1 already, so I'm pumped about everything with details about it.

Nice to know that Sandisnk Class 10 are one of the best... Makes me wonder why people insist to skimp on cards and cry about how high bitrates don't work.

Well I watched his stuff when I originally was going to choose the 7D over the GH1.... I squabbled and freaked out like everyone else over which one to choose for many moons. Then I got both. I sold my 7D. Was kind of dumb of me because I should of just rented it out and kept it because it still gets requested more than the GH1 and you have to explain to people and show them images... and the no HD monitor on set really freaks people out, but the 7D didn't have real hd out either....

Thanks for posting the thread. I actually did a similar shootout with the Iscorama 36 on the 7D, 5D and GH1 with another poster on this board, Pirata.

I havent posted the results yet, but shooting with the Canon cameras is like shooting in the GH1's 720p mode. Except in lowlight.

Yes, I do have way too many videos. (236) Youtube was supposed to approve me for their Content Managment Service so that I could seperate all videos into seperate channels and give people easier access to related videos. Unfortunately, I'm still waiting for that to come through.

There is only one thing the GH1 needs at this point. HDMI out during preview and recording. (I'm hoping this i feasible if you kill the ability to monitor via the onboard LCDs during HDMI out)

It can take months... if it's been less than 3 months, I wouldn't worry about it just yet.

Fun thread :) always nice to see my friend Mark getting nice responses to his abundant collection of technical and artistic resources. He's always happy to share his findings and his compilation of knowledge is invaluable to many folks including myself.

I've shot plenty of footage at 400-1000 ISO without any issues of FPN with the GH1. It comes down to being 3 stops underexposed then it rears it's ugly head.

You can get some banding at the higher ISOs in lowlight, but realistically speaking as long as you don't grossly underexpose then you're pretty good to go.

Not to mention it's been noted many times that the ISO ratings are very different on the GH1 vs the 7D.

Just comparing non-scientifically side by side with the same lens the GH1 definitely looks brighter at the same ISO settings compared to the 7D. So who knows how much of the 7D better lowlight performance is simply perception in some instances.

of course YMMV
