Canon 7D vs. D90 (in terms of "jellovision"

I am pretty tired of rigging up my XHA1 to a 35mm adapter and would much prefer to shoot with a nice DSLR. I have a D90 but the "jellovision" is quite horrible. Is the 7D significantly better?

The jellovision shouldn't be the deciding factor between these two cameras. The 7d beats the d90 in just about every other category as well. I don't want to go into detail right now but I can tell you that you'll be much happier with the 7d. But basically, the d90 doesn't have full manual settings.

In terms of Jello, the cameras themselves are not the problem, it's the sensor.

There is a learning curve in going from a CCD sensor (XH-A1) to a CMOS sensor (DSLRs).

Even the RED has Jello issues.

My 5d is immeasurably better than my (now sold) D90 was. The 5d isn't perfect, but it's a big improvement.

Yeah I love Nikon but their video is nowhere near the same level as Canon's if we're comparing D90 vs. 7D/5D.

if you do it, i say to don't get rid of the xha1. The jello is really bad on the 7d compared to cmos sensors on camcorders. Keep the camcorder in situations that require a lot of shakey movement like moving handheld or shots from moving vehicles.

no,jello is not that bad,besides who needs quick blurry pans and shaky ugly footage ? you can go handheld on 24p,but is handheld with 24p camcorder any prettier ? i doubt that.
quick pans and shaky footage as factor when choosing camera ? Is this how you would use it ? for shaking and panning around ? Its not cam for home videos so you have treat it like film cam.

ive said this before on this forum but be careful..dont throw the baby out with the bathwater. but if u can get a 7d .. it never fails to take me by surprise just how nice it is..except on patterned stuff..oh well.

If ur in this for a hobby and the love of shooting quality footage then just have a 7d..if you shoot for a living and work for clients you must;

1. know the limits and the advantages of your 7d.
2. have another device to film with beyond the 7ds limits...tight chequered suit anyone?

Maybe you have a steadier hand than i do, but the slightest vibration from my hand causes jello, and no i'm not shaking it. Just slow pans combined with stress on the forearm muscles. I'm not saying it's jello all the time, but the occassional jello pops up during handheld when the arm is in a stress position, like a raised position.

It's just not true that these sensors are as stable as your standard cmos camcorders.. I seriously can't do the same stuff with the 7d as with my sony fx1000. Even with a full shoulder mount I would not trust this cam on an important shoot, unless it's tied down to a tripod, jib, or dolly.

This may sound obvious, but have you tried renting a 7D? Lots of high-end photo stores rent them, give one a test drive. Then go out and shoot like you normally would, and see how "bad" it is to you, and how easily you can adjust.

If you've got a "Cloverfield" style of shooting it may not be your cup of tea. But if you use a lot of locked down shots and slow pans, tilts, jibs, etc. you should be fine.
