CANON 7D Grading tests with in camera over saturated and "LOOKS! "

DEPTH OF PHIL

Well-known member
Hey Guys u got me thinking, so we're putting some images out there,
Please feel free and add your own graded SHOTS so we can help eliminate some of the potential banding artifact issues by sharing knowledge and experience! Here are some test graded screen shots - med rez , shot with Nikon 24mm f.2, 50mm f1.1.4, 35mm - 85mm zoom f2.8, Canon 7d.

I see some slight banding in the shadows but i think" Looks" does that even on my F23 stuff! Notice where the Bokeh is heavier the banding is also, so deeper depth of feel will help eliminate that, but for me "not", hell i want shallow! lol What i love is , we can see the detail of the smoke and hair in screenshot 4
cheers

Pretty decent stills, but before anyone can really comment. I'd like to know what ISO, you were shooting under. I'm preparing for my next movie to be shot with the 7D - just ordered it yesterday - YAY! but I've been messing around with my Wife's 5DMK2 and noticed some weird color artifacts that start occuring at high ISOs, generally above 1000 ISO. I say this because I've read a few posts and some sometimes the ISO is so high it may be contributing to the problem.

Beautiful shots Phil.

I can see in shot 3 the banding that I experience, if I am seeing what is refered to as banding.

1) the top right of the phone, as the shades go from lighter to darker, clear lines differentiating each shade.

2) what's the blue horizontal streaking? That is something I don't think I have seen in my footage so far.

I absolutely love the look of these, it gives the feeling that I think you're trying to achieve right on the money.

cheers guys, PaPa the blue streak is from the looks filter, silly bad negative fx i believe
but one things it indicates is don't over process in post
Cheers

The thing I notice about high ISO between the two cameras is that really high ISO on the 5d2 vertical banding starts showing up quite a bit.

The 7D has more noise in the overall image, but I have yet to see the same vertical banding in high ISO 7D footage I shoot compared to when I was shooting with a 5d2.

ISO varies from 200 -800 . i like a little grain to help with the filmic look!
5DMK2 delivers a fatter picture, but the monitoring issues are very frustrating to me!

ISO does introduce more artifacts, but leaving the lenses open tends to give a softer look and i was trying to go sharper without DSLR aliasing! We still use this for only B roll, i still love my EX1r with Cinemek G35, and we use Red when we can afford it!
Cheers and good luck on the film , have you mapped out the sound scenario yet?"

I was hoping to stay above ISO 320 to be honest for our feature. I can always add grain. I'd rather shoot clean then dirty it up. Sound is not an issue for me, I never pipe the audio into the camera anyway. I use a Sound Devices 702T for audio. It records 24Bit 48KHz audio onto compact flash. Used that plus a seenheiser 410 for my last feature and the audio was awesome. I figure we'll do that and use Plural Eyes to sync the audio, then my editor can take it from there. The 7D will be one of our main cameras. Our movie happens in the present time AND the past - we plan on shooting the present day stuff with the RED and the past stuff with the 7D and color them differently to make it easier for the audience to know what time period they are in. The movie hops back and forth through time.

I'm glad that you shared your images. I'm hungry right now to learn as much as possible about the camera. But I've been warning people away from high ISOs. So many indies want to shoot 1600 but they can destroy their footage. The guys over in the After Class Thread showed how you can make cheap lights Soft 1200w Equiv lights for about $120 a piece. So there's no since in not pushing the light to the max and keeping that iso low - lucky for me though I am shooting a comedy.

How did you get hookec up with SyFy? That's so cool.
