Canon 7D Fixed Pattern Noise

Hi,

I did some test movies with my new Canon 7D with the 24-70mm 2.8L in my room with only one light source of 100W from the roof and I got some Fixed Pattern Noise at ISO 6400. I would like to know if it is normal because some say that the 7D it is clear from FPN.

Thank you in advance,

Ricardo

I'm talking about the vertical banding, not the amount of noise. Is it normal to see at high ISO Levels? I know that the 5D has it but everybody says that the 7D doesn't.

I'm not saying it isn't an issue (but I haven't experienced it), but really... shooting at 6400 ISO on a $1,700 camera and expecting anything I think is a huge accomplishment.

I just did some tests and I can see the vertical banding (FPN) when I increase the shutter with all ISO's in low light (indoor with a 2.8 aperture). It reminds me my old GH1!!!

Is the FPN always present in a CMOS chip?

Do you think I should send it for exchange?

You have to understand...those are high ISOs... I don't expect ANY camera to perform great at those high ISOs. The 5Dll should act a little better...but still...expect some degradation to the image no matter what.

That is normal. the 5dmk2 has 10% less overall noise but a more noticeable pattern. In reality shooting above 1000 iso you will have visible noise at 1080p. Noise reduction software does a great job of taking it out though with only slight loss of detail. To get the most cinematic footage I recommend adding a bit more light to the scene and running 160 and 320 iso with fast prime lenses stopped down to f 2.0

I think you should turn on some lights.
