canon 7d - can't seem to open cr2 files in photoshop cs4

Hey, all. I've been reading / trying to figure out how to open cr2 files in photoshop cs4.

But, I will say this... I don't care if I can open cr2 files in photoshop... I mainly want to convert them... photoshop just seemed the obvious choice. I won't normally shoot in raw, it was an accident, but I do desire to open these specific files, but having trouble.

Here's what I've done with photoshop, though; I've updated to "Camera Raw 5.5" and made sure the plugin is in the appropriate location (librarty/application support/adobe/plugins/cs4/fileformats) but still I get this message on trying to open.

"Could not complete your request because photoshop does not recognize this type of file."

All that being said, does anybody know how I can convert these files? Either with photoshop or without... don't necessarily care how it's done.

Thx.

Cris

Thought I'd update... I feel a little dumb, but thought I'd help some other poor sap that might be as dense as me. The 7d comes with a disk. On that disk is a program called "Digital Photo Professional". You can open / convert files there.

Kind of wish I could have used photoshop, but for my purposes, I typically won't shoot raw. Anyway, there it is...

You might also want to google 'Adobe Lightroom', an application specifically designed to handle RAW files. I believe it opens the 7d ones too - it's just that every manufacturer has their own way of encoding RAW, there's no single file format.

i use adobe photoshop cs4/camera raw. when all else fails, you might want to try and uninstall and then reinstall adobe photoshop? i'd try and troubleshoot photoshop first. camera raw is pretty awesome. i always use it for my raw photos. i've never had a problem with it myself. this artcle i found at adobe.com might help you troubleshoot the issue:

Don't uninstall Photoshop CS4!

The raw engine (Adobe Camera Raw) has not yet been updated to work with the 7D.

We'll all have to wait until Adobe updates it - but Don't blame Adobe - they have to reverse engineer the raw files to work with their product - it'd be a much simpler world if the Still camera manufacturers would STOP making mediocre processing software and spend that brain power on improving their wonderful cameras.

There - rant off.

Isn't Raw supposed to be a standard image format? Why do all these manufacturers create all these spin-off formats? I wish they used the same implementation and made an OpenRAW format.

I was trying to get 7D CR2's in to After Effects CS3 - full size RAW works with Camera Raw 5.5, but it doesn't recognise sRAW.

The really interesting thing though is I have a hot pixel that DPP would reduce to about 50% size but not eliminate. I tried the sensor cleaning to get it mapped out but that didn't work (I took a 30 sec exposure with the lens off and the cap on the body). When I bring the test shot into AE it completely mapped out the dead pixel! Better than DPP, and I like the RAW adjustments you can make importing to AE better than the controls offered in DPP.

EDIT: On closer inspection DPP seems to flag the hot pixel with a little 5x5 "x" within a black box that is burned in when converted to tif. Not sure why it's doing this. AE removes the hot pixel, but otherwise the image directly imported to AE looks worse than the DPP conversion in terms of noise and colour, and that's with noise reduction and sharpening off. Weird.

I think you are mistaken unless I am not doing something right. i have updated to the latest RAW files update...5.5. CS4 will still not open the RAW picture files from my Canon 7D...

Am I missing something?

cr2 for t2i in photoshop cs4

cr2 for t2i in photoshop cs4

Opening a t2i raw format file in cs4 won't work because a filter for the new format has not been made for cs4 -- there is a filter for cs5 that will open t2i raw but it won't work with cs4.

I take it all back -- I ran the updater for cs4 and bridge now recognizes the cr2 files for the t2i.
