Canon 70D clip problems in Post

I shot a wedding using the 70d and in one of the ceremony clips the video would play halfway and then freeze in any video player. Premiere pro lags big time in trying to process and play the clip and when I try to exporting my timeline I get an error (error compiling movie, unknown error) because of the clip. Did anyone experience a similar problem, any solutions? I have tried to export half of the clip, the portion that plays and use that in my edit, but even that exported half causes premiere to slow down and gives an error when exporting the ceremony.

It sounds like a corrupted clip which will usually cause an export to fail.

Try IN and OUT trimming with QT or MPEG Streamclip (or other) and see if you can salvage any of the clip, and make a new file out of it.

I believe there is software out there that can also try to fix corrupted clips as well.

You can also try to reimport your original media if possible.

It must have something to do with the file size as it hit the 4gb limit. I exported out of premiere the first half after trimming the second half which doesn't play. However when I bring the new exported file I still have the same problems during export for the ceremony and the video causes premier to freeze temporary before it processes the video for playback.

Sorry I was not clear on the trimming issue, premiere sees the clip length only to the portion where it plays, so it's automatically trimmed. I believe this problem has to do with the 4gb limit and the fact that I transferred the clips from the sub folder on the SD card and not the whole folder. All other clips play fine but are a max of 2gb in length. Sadly I don't have the files anymore on the SD card as I delete them after making two back up copies. I have managed to use portions of the clip in my project with a successful export. What I did is every time I get the error during export I look at the percentage it stopped at and go back to the timeline and delete that clip and so on till I had a successful export. So to start with I lost 50% of the original clip and then an addition 15% deletes to make it work. Luckily this was my B cut away camera as I used a Panasonic HMC80 for my main camera and audio.

You might be able to "fake" the file structure by just making folders with the same names as what the card would normally have. Then try importing that clip in different programs to see which ones will take it. I had to do this once a few years ago with FCP and the EOS import utility and recall that I did get it to work, just my memory is a little hazy as to what the exact sequence was.

Try renaming the file type to *.mpeg (save a copy of the original first!!!).

I personally think you have a problem based on: 1. too slow of a card, 2. off brand battery, 3. you shook the camera on that clip, 4. bad luck, hand oil on the card. I say this because I've had issues on the past and it was related to all of the above, recently I've had two SD cards and one micro sd all were sandisk or lexar but I've had two transcend and a kingston go bad in the past. you touch the sd with your hand boom oil on the gold. off brand batteries are never 100% a perfect fit you move the camera and it loses power. etc... you might try disk image of the entire card if you have it intact, you might try a usb cable and transferring from the camera to the computer. Good luck
