Canon 6D Full Frame

Worth the upgrade from the 5DII...probably not unless it is used for a ton of low light shooting

Agreed, also if the hdmi out is clean, it may be decent for greenscreen work.
Oh, and Alex, your wedding vid was killer, lots of fun to watch.:)

I don't understand. Are you saying the 6D will be better in low light than the 5DII?
yes, by far. Digic 5+ absolutely CRUSH the now-4-year-old Digic 4 in the 5dII. I saw at least 2, maybe 3 stop improvement in the sample, same with some of the 5dIII stuff.

Ahhhh, very interesting. Just google searched "Digic 5." Now I see the light. Thanks.

Man people really give it to Canon. I've got the Mark III while I wait..........:).for the 2 BMC that I ordered. My clients can't believe how much better the image is from the mark II. If the 6D is a b-camera for my mark III, till the BMC comes out, with full frame and Digic 5 for $2k .... I'm in!

I understand that a lot of people are disappointed with the 6D's video specs, codec etc., and I won't go into detail about how it is really not made for video.

But nevertheless, I think the the example video shown of the forest was pretty good and simply had a look that a lot of people love. In many ways I liked the look of it better than the short part of the GH3 video I watched.

But I have a question. I saw the two lenses they used were both f4. I have only used APS-C sensor cameras, and I always try to get lenses that are constant 2.8 because I generally don't have a lot of lights available to me. I don't always shoot 2.8, but I need the option.

I understand that the full-frame sensor is much better in low-light, but how much does that offset the slower lens? I am asking about usability in low-light situations.

Sorry if this is a newbie question, but in regard to full-frame zoom lenses, what is considered a good fast lens? f4? Do f2.8 zoom lenses cost a lot more and have little use?

Well I did a little research. There are f2.8 zooms, and they are a good sight more expensive than the f4 zooms!

How does f4 on a full frame compare to f2.8 on APS-C in terms of low-light performance?

F4 or F2.8 is a constant measurement. So F4 would be a stop slower on the full frame camera at similar ISO settings. The full frame camera might be more sensitive so in use, the F4 on full frame might be the same as F2.8 on an APS-C after ISO is adjusted for correct exposure.

In theory, going from 1.6x crop to FF means you have a surface that is 2.5x larger, and, if photosite design is similar tech, you're capturing at least 2.5x more photons, which means you can go a bit over a stop higher with your ISO and still have no more noise in your footage. So, under these very restrictive asumptions, 50mm f/4.5 on FF would have the same FoV, DoF, and also noise, as 31mm f/2.8 on APS-C. Again, "in theory".

Will this have the same video performance as the 5d3? If it does, this looks really good for the price.
I don't really care about anything else...as long as moire/aliasing is gone and it is slightly worse or equal to 5d3 in low light, this seems like quite the bargain...not sure why you guys are bashing it so much...

Indeed, if it is a mini-5D3, it will probably be a winner... But if it is a super-T4i, it will probably be a loser. We'll know soon enough.

That is a pretty good summary!

The T4i is a much improved T3i (MUCH better still photo auto focus, touch screen LCD, auto focus in video mode, etc.) But it still has the aliasing & moire of the T3i.

The high ISO on the 6D certainly looks good on the surface, as does the weather proofing and the ALL-I codec that is also on the 5D3. For stills, the auto focus is no where near as good as the 5DIII on paper.

The first video was way too small in bandwidth (3.3 Mbps) and physical size (940x520) to tell exactly what the sensor will give us. A lot of it was also shot at ISO 6,400 and 12,800.

On the 6D availablility: It is up and available for pre-order as of noon Tuesday on B&H.

I had hoped for a much more video centric camera from Canon. But the 6D still might be worthwhile for those who need a decent stills camera and video, and don't want to pay for the 5DIII.

We will have to see what we really have, and where the prices settle to judge the relative value for stills and/or video. The 5D3 has been available on special deals as low as $2,750 recently.

Now if the Yen would just go back to it's normal 120 range from it's current 80, that $2,750 5DIII would actually be $1,833, and we wouldn't have this mess .....

I highly doubt they have stripped the video functionality, yes t4i was a letdown but if Canon would make 6D anything lesser than 5dmk3 video-wise they'll make their biggest mistake ever...

With that said, the still samples look freakin' awesome. Tried to wack them in lightroom, base noise/sensor banding seems very similar to 5dmk3, aswell as the general image IQ. Love it. First time in quite a while I pre-order a camera!! Now just getting rid of that old brick 5dmk2... :)

Anyone have a list of prime lenses that would fill out a 6D camera bag nicely and more cost-effectively than buying zoom lenses? Is there a link you can point me to?

yes t4i was a letdown

Just to clarify:

The T4i is a great stills camera. It is also a very good "camcorder", with auto focusand face tracking, and silint auto focus with the 40 mm and 18-135 mm STM. Good audio too.

Of course, it cotinures with the same "very good +" image that the T3i and 7D had, and there are still a lot of people shooting that.

I was planning on using the T4i as my only still and video camera, until high ISO/low light requirements pushed me to the 5DIII and now the 1DX.

Yes, it has the old aliasing & moire. But also a lot of positives.

I actually love the T4i as much as I used to love my 1DsII. Same still image quality, and that was my favorite camera ever. (Mamiya 7II comes in 3rd now.)

But, yes, Canon bobbled a few things on that, alias & moire, plus some firmware items for video. Waiting for ML.

And if you are cine style only, and not a lot of Canon glass, and not a heavy stills photog, there are better options.
