I never use my flash as 90% of the time I'm only doing video, but just today I decided to take some pictures and the flash would not pop up?

Any ideas what might be wrong?

thanks

Do you have something on the hot shoe? If so, take it off.

No, nothing on the hot shoe. But when I went into the menu system is says that the camera thinks there is an external flash connected therefore I cannot use the one on the camera?

Thanks for the help

This is a crazy Canon design fault, The spring clips in the shoe mount are pressed down, and dont relase upwards when you take your mic or light off. To remedy this,
simply prise up the clips with a toothpick or similar and your flash wil work again. Tip. Always use a bracket to mount accesories on the camera.
Hope this helps

Honestly I have no idea where to look? I know it's in the Hot Shoe area but I see no springs or anything like that

The little metal spring strip at the bottom of the shoe, (1 each side), they depress down when you mount anything on the shoe. simply prise them both up, just a little, and the problem will be solved.

I was trying to keep it simple. There is a small pin under the clip that gets stuck down, it has to be released for the flash to work. Running a blade or toothpck under the spring strip is normally enough to release it. try Googling " 550D flash wont pop up" or something similar, it will give you all the answers you need.

Wow, it worked...... Serious design flaw here with these cameras.... That flash was stuck there for like a month after I had a Mic in the hot shoe.

Thank You
