Canon announced a 21mp 5d Mk II digital SLR (still camera) today. It has a 30fps 1080p video mode. Now I know it doesn't have great audio recording capability, but this scenario has run through my mind today. Could one load up the camera with a huge CF card, shoot video with a nice L lens to get shallow depth of field, and record audio on, say, an HVX, then edit the two together and essentially get a very good, cinematic picture? Or am I crazy?

If the 5DII actually works well as a video camera, you wouldn't need a 35mm lens adapter. You could mount any one of several great Canon lenses (zoom or prime), mess with focus pulling, exploit shallow depth of field, etc. It would be incredible. Just shoot little 12 minute or less clips. That's all.

INHO it's just a toy. There would be serious tool if it has HDMI Full HD uncompressed output which could be recorded by hdmi blackmagic card. But h.264 or motionjpeg footy (like nikon d90 has) can't be used in post, colorcorrected and printed to film. Ofcourse You can try, but it won't look good. Some new cameras have hdmi, but i'm afraid these show only stills while capturing.

Oh well, it was a nice fantasy for a while. DSLR video is not quite ready to put Panasonic and Sony out of business I guess.

I think the recent addition of video to high end dslrs is a good thing. I've wondered why that didn't happen years ago.

the camera companies aren't going to give us one camera that does it all, even though they easily could I do think.

there was a great article in DV Magazine maybe a year ago about "feature fixing" by camera manufacturers. They can't do too much too quickly as it will cost them $$$ in the long run.

basically you want a camera that does everything and they want your money. that's the game.

What would be great is if someone made an HVX type camera with a Nikon lens mount, without the need for a clunky adapter.

Red is working on a DSMC (Digital Still & Motion Camera).

They say that it will be a dSLR killer. Maybe this will be the do it all camera. If the price is affordable. We'll see.

The article I read says it has an HDMI output, though of course it doesn't say whether that's streaming a full uncompressed signal real time, or is just for playback...

I am not sure why you think H.264 could not be used in post?
It can always be converted to panasonic codec, and edited from there.

The camera can record video plus sound as a reference track,
then you record main sound with second unit recorder, and sync in edit system to the reference track.

The Canon 5D mark II
IS a full frame 35mm sized sensor.
You CAN use 35mm lenses with Canon "L" quality glass.

What's NOT to love?

...That being said, I am not sure I would do that, but it does seem do-able.
