Canon 5D MKIII Spotted In The Wild?

The RED Epic is used as a still camera and has been used for several high end magazine covers.

ho knows what Canon will do but I think they cant make a stills only camera anymore knowing what the 5DMKII did.

I'd love to see a sales breakdown sometime, the percentage of sales that went to people who bought it as a stills camera and those who bought it for video. Probably no way to ever know without a serious survey.

I still talk to people ALL the time who are shooting on lower end dedicated video cameras who own 7Ds or 5Dmk2s and when I say "You know, that 7D shoots MUCH better looking video than that 3 year old prosumer video camera does" they respond with "Really... I never thought about that".

We are gear heads, we are the minority, even amongst the "pro" crowd.

Neither the 5D nor the GH2 are professional cameras, but both are widely used by pros. Seen plenty of National Geo photographers with GH2s in their bags, but mostly as a compact B-cams.

The photo looks more like the backside of the new 4k cinema model prototype Canon had under glass at the Nov. Cinema line rollout. It had a 16:9 LCD.

I bet still photogs would never go back to a fixed screen once they used one that allowed easier framing from below and above. Especially those with bad knees or those sick of carrying a ladder...

What is a “pro camera” anyway?

I worked as a professional photographer in my first life and the cameras we used on the 35mm end were all Nikon 8008's not F4's.

There use to be this thing about pop up flashes on cameras “No pro would a pop up flash so cameras with pop up flashes were not “pro” no matter how good the camera was.

It comes down to needs of the Pro versus what we are told we need and what is "pro" by the marketers.

My current 7D is far more pro than the old 8008's I worked with but the pop up flash is holding it back!!! LOL.

Thats funny!

Without being snooty we should think about build quality as what makes it "pro" as apposed to what pro means (making money with the gear you use.) Can it stand up to heavy use for at least a couple of years and also have features that a heavy user needs. That is what makes it "pro".

They don't look at the LCD when they shoot, the look through the eyepiece and they use monitors to review shots.

Because once they are forced to get their head directly behind the camera, they might as well use viewfinder. Given other options, they just might use them.

No, because then instead of looking at a digital representation of the shot, you are looking at the actual objects reflected off a mirror, amongst other reasons.

Hmmm...considering it's shooting to digital, a digital image would seem more representative of what you are getting. I've seen press pool photogs holding cams over their heads shooting blindly. A good time to have a screen titling down.

Never said it wouldn't be handy. In fact I said it would. I just said that a lot of pro stills guys, especially older ones, would look at it and think "What the F, is this thing doing on here? I hate it."

I was watching a web video somewhere on the C300, and in the intro the host of the show mentioned that according to Canon's marketing research, 70% of 5DIIs sold were being used solely for video. I guess that little marketing fact would be enough for some camera company to start a cinema division.

Nikon is showing their D800 36MP in 2 weeks, now, if Nikon start shipping a few weeks after that, and the camera has better performance than the 5D ( I doubt it ), do you think that would force Canon to release earlier the Mk3?..... I wouldn't mind to have a 5DMK3 in the summer. Let's hope Nikon Rumors announce is true.

Well, that depends. How long does it take to retool a camera to add a headphone jack and uncompressed 4:2:2 8 bit HDMI out? :-)

Can you find the link to that?

Good point. I to have seen this.
