Canon 5D MKIII Spotted In The Wild?

Sorry..despite irritating profitable GH2 users, doesn't really address the issue. Other than a dogmatic "moveable screen amateur, unmoveable pro"....

GH2 is a small digital cinema camera, not a DSLR. No mirror.

My two GH2s along with a hearty, beat up old HVX200 made me a couple grand the past three days. Does that count as pro?

(edit- and about 20k worth of glass the GH2s travel with... and we used a lot of it)

" don't think you'll see swivel screen (Or a pop-up flash, for that matter) on a 5Dx, or a 7Dx any more that you will on a 1D, just not a part of a pro-spec camera, and a point of weakness."

Hmm. if you are concerned about vulnerability, leave it locked into the body. Otherwise..allow the flexibility to view above or below...without an external monitor/battery and cable making for a really vulnerable setup. Did having a fold out screen diminish the GH2?

You're missing the point. Remember cameras such as the 5DMk2 (and its successors) were designed primarily as photographic tools for professionals. Video was a happy by-product, but don't be under any illusion; most of theses cameras are sold to photographers, not videographers.

News photographers woking with Reuters (for example) in rough conditions don't want weak points on their cameras; they want solid dependable tools. And pro photographers would not generally use the something like a GH2.

See?

Please lets keep the gh2 OUT of this thread.

I own a gh2, its hacked, its incredible value for money as a video camera but it has nothing to do with this thread.

I agree. Introduces a point of failure/breakage for minimal benefit. If you're buying a $3K (or more) body and you'll just buy a monitor.
For $16K you get a swiveling LCD on the C300. On a RED camera it also swivels. This is easy enough to do and should be a feature on all DSLR cams.

Haha. Funny.

I also own one and I’m a pro. But my gear isn’t. I feel so ashamed.

Because they aren't stills cameras, they aren't used in the same way, and they have a totally different form factor. As was noted above the MAIN market for the camera would be professional stills photographers who would wonder "what the F is this thing on here for?".

Not saying it wouldn't be a handy feature to have, it just doesn't fir the market the camera will primarily be aimed at.

No, it's a consumer grade stills camera, in between a point and shoot and a pro DSLR. It just happens, when hacked, to deliver very good video footage.

That's not dissing it, just recognizing the market they created it and marketed it for.

I'm glad it doesn't have a swivel LCD, but that's me. Makes it feel more solid, better for people who use Zacuto Z-Finder products, and more suited to the typical design the still photographer crowd is used to.

The 5D was never in Canon PRO line of camera either. 5D is always marketed as a SEMI pro camera, but it never stop the pro from creating stunning images with it.

After looking at the images, I am going to say 7Dm2. The layout of the controls and design look MUCH closer to my 7D than to the 5D in my opinion. The 1Dx is full frame so why release another full frame right after it when you can stagger in an APS-C covering both sensor sizes and then bring the 5D after? Of course, I am just guessing! :) And I say this with no flash even. But, I guess we'll see.

It was never their top of the line pro camera, but it was maybe the best studio camera with that massive sensor. With decent glass I can zoom in on a 21mb RAW image to the point where a pore on someone's face looks the grand canyon and be tack sharp. The main drawback as a pro camera is the slow burst I think, glacial compared to the Nikons and some of the other Canons.

So what is digital cinema then? The codec Driftwood has developed is incredibly robust, the sensor is as sophisticated as the old red sensor, likely more so. The body will take nearly every prime lens ever made. Is the line really drawn because the body feels plasticy and because the initial buyer is not who ended up embracing the camera (us)?

It wasn't created or marketed to be a digital CINEMA camera. It was created and marketed to be a consumer level stills camera that had good video capabilities for people to shoot their kid's soccer game or maybe make a youtube video with their friends. It turned out when people got hold of the code they were able to push it's capabilities way beyond that, but that wasn't what Panasonic intended when they created it.

The same is true of Canon, the 5Dmk2 was intended to be an entry level pro stills camera best suited to the studio shooter. It was never intended to be a digital cinema camera.

Let's steer this topic back to the 5D. If you want to discuss the merits of the GH2 in any regard, start a new topic.

The orignal concept to add video to the 5DMKII was just a "Hey we can add video if we do line skipping" That idea took the camera to a whole new user base even Canon was surprised by.
I still have the first 5D and was looking at upgrading to the new version when it came out and when it did still guys didn't get why they added video and was kinda pissed about it. That changed quickly.
Canon knows this and I would be surprised if they don't put more video friendly features in the new 5D what ever they may be, but to say its not a video camera is only really addressing the 5DMKII.

The RED Epic is used as a still camera and has been used for several high end magazine covers.

ho knows what Canon will do but I think they cant make a stills only camera anymore knowing what the 5DMKII did.
