Canon 5D MKIII speculations on release date and pricing

Well, I've heard that PMA is being cancelled this year due to lack of new kit from Japan, and is being piggy-backed on CES.

So, if the 5DIII was being slated for an Oct-Nov release it's most likely to be end Q1 / Start Q2 20112. Unless it's going to be a 2013 release. Or not as the case may be.

TBH nobody who actually knows is being allowed to say anything, so we're all guessing in the dark.

Rumors have very little, if any value. Anything CR posts that's labeled "CR1" might as well be a blind guess. Nothing to see here until Canon tells us about it.

It comes when it comes, frankly I'm not sure what we video guys are waiting for. It will still have alaising & upscaled rez on a sensor this size, unless they would either put a fan in it or remove the mirror; none to be seen with 100% certainty.

In fact, my expectations go so far as it at least having 60fps in 720p. People are in for a massive dissapointment, unless they're photographers and are hyped, cus THAT's a million more times sober.

I can see the logic for needing a fan to keep things cool, but I don't see how the mirror effects resolution or aliasing, especially once it's flipped up and out of the way.

I don't either. I think Martin is conflating the low moire of the GH2 with the lack of a mirror
CR1 rumers are barely worth noting, when it reaches CR3 it might mean something.

Oh, yes, please remember this is a camera for Photographers, it's NOT a cine camera, even if it has a movie mode. I think any improvements will target photographers who will be very happy with it.

If i am Canon i would add just little enhancement to the D series dslr, and hand over the entire big sensor indie filmmaking camera to the camcorder dept. This way they will make more profit and being able to compete with af100 and fs100. Most of all, avoiding from the 7d or 5d in cannibalizing their upcoming "af100/fs100" products.

Pretty much they have a choice of either heavily investing in the low priced dslr market (5d, 7d, 60d) or go into af100, fs100 or even f3 teritory. If they choose the later strategy, then expect no revolutionary enhancement to the 5D, 7d...etc.

Pretty much my thoughts too.

Just do enough to give a reasonably clean video recording, and let the camcorder division build a "proper" camcorder with all the video gubbins that would be totally out of place on a DSLR.

like others have said, they arent going to sacrifice theyre photography department by stuffing theyre flagship pro body with video features, and with a sensor that has 28mp or whatever it will have, how good is a 1080p image going to look? the real question now is how long does it take for them to put a camcorder out on par with the fs100 etc. if they dont get moving soon it could get ugly for theyre video department over the next few months.

I don't see a CR status on that, but it seems reasonable. The 1Ds has been due for an update for a while now.
I'll be surprised if we see 5DIII cameras on dealers shelves before the new year.

I saw this a week ago and said "so what?" It's still barely CR1.

If Canon do push the 5DIII pixel count to 32 MP as some rumours suggest, then we can say goodbye to video, as there's no way Canon will waste computing power down-sampling that to 1080p.

A "3D" with a video-centric sensor is a possibility, but more likely is a splitting of the ways, with video being hived off to a dedicated camcorder where it belongs, and DSLRs (At least the high MP "Pro" models) eschewing video entirely.

I’m either being a Negative Nancy or a Realistic Rachel… but here is my prediction:

If Canon loads up the 5D III with 30+ MP… I think video mode will suffer from either:

A) overheating
B) even more aliasing/moire and rolling shutter

Wouldn’t pro photographers prefer 20mp with enhanced ISO, dynamic range, FPS, and AF capabilities rather than an extra 12mp? As you take away MP, you can utilize more processor power towards DR, ISO, FPS and AF.
I think once you get beyond 20… honestly it just becomes unnecessary. It’s just wasted processing power going to something unnecessary. Even if you’re printing billboards, I don’t think 32 MP is necessary. Photoshop plug-ins can do a damn good job at interpolating 20mp to 30 and beyond if you, for whatever reason, ABSOLUTELY need more than 20.

However, knowing Canon, I think it’s inevitable that they will play the resolution game, and the result for us will either be worse aliasing/moire, or overheating. I don’t think there’s room in that tiny camera for a 32mp sensor to downscale without distortion without having overheating problems. The reality is that downscaling that much without having moire, rolling shutter, and aliasing in 24p real time does take processing power, and I’m very worried that it will result in overheating problems far worse than the 7D, or that Canon will give us a camera that doesn’t overheat much, but has crappy moire, rolling shutter, and aliasing.

theres like a jillion of these threads. shouldn't there be a rule 'if it ain't for real it ain't up'? seriously. and i've never posted like this but, enough. effin enough.
