C200: Canon 5D Mark IV as a "B" camera to Canon C200 for 1080p videos?

Hello,

I already own a Canon 5D Mark IV and have recently discovered that it produces fantastic images for video.

That said, I am strongly considering investing in a Canon C200 and was wondering how viable is the Canon 5D Mark IV as a "B" camera for it.

Can you get the two looking reasonably close? Or are there picture profiles that already largely match? IE: Standard, Neutral, Portrait etc.

Canon is marketing the 5D Mark IV with C-Log as an excellent B camera for the C300 Mark II, so I would say it would be a great B camera for the C200 too.

Are there differences? Sure. But most Canon cameras can be matched very well with each other.

As much as I hate doing it, I've used my 5D III and IV(not together) as "B" cameras for sit-downs with my C300 and F55. They can be matched reasonably well.

Pretty much everything NorBro said. I've got a 5D4 w/ CLog and a C100M2 and for my eyes, it is the same great Canon color. You'll be able to match with relative ease, I'm sure. :)

I've heard the 5D MKIV is sharper but the 5D MKIII looked like mush when intercut with C100/300. Colors may be close but sharpness on the 5D MKIII was so much softer. Thought I saw some reviews that the 5D MKIV is much sharper though? Have not shot with it yet.

I'm also very curious about this. I'd consider a MKIV if the sharpness was comparable.

I'm also thinking about getting a C200 and a Canon DSLR as a B cam. I've narrowed it down to the 5D Mark IV and the 1DC. A lot of ppl saying the 1DC has this special mojo but is the image really going to be that different from the 5D Mark IV w/ C-Log upgrade?

The 5D Mark IV will easily be sharper than the C200 or any of the cinema cameras in 4K. It's a modern DSLR meant for stills with a really sharp sensor (maybe too sharp for some).

I think the 1DC was really special with its C-Log. Not getting the same vibe from 5D Mark IV. It's more of a C300/C500 C-Log. You will really see a difference if you've used all of the Canon cameras. Just like the C300 Mark II's C-Log3 looks really nice IMO.

On the 5D Mark IV, I mostly shoot neutral, which just looks so good...the greens, reds...just the right amount of sharpness. I wish the regular picture profiles had great dynamic range...would be perfect.

Why do you believe the 5D IV would be sharper than the C200? I would assume that you could pull more detail out of the RAW from the C200 than the MJPG of the 5D. The OLPF on the DSLR might be different than on the C200, but the C200 has a larger sensor area for capturing video. Has anyone seen a test comparing the 5DIV to a cinema camera?

The 5DIV only "crops/windows" it's sensor when shooting 4K. Otherwise the HD image is derived from the whole "full frame" sensor(with whatever technique Canon uses on it)...

I'm not really sure to be honest...sensor size, pixels, resolution? I don't know. The 5D Mark IV sensor resolution is 6720 x 4480. I would assume that might help.

The DSLRs just have a different sharpness to them...it's hard to explain.

If you can and/or have any interest, download some 5D Mark IV 4K videos (not C-Log) and watch on a 4K monitor if possible.

Here are two random ones:

(It's one of those detail/sharpness/fine detail/artificial sharpness/etc. discussions...shallow DOF plays a part too.)

In 1080p, the 5D IV still does the binned "FullHD" of the classic Canon DSLR look, correct? Otherwise, the 4K is just a 4K pixel size crop of the sensor.

I had a 1DC and I would say the picture was certainly nice, but I would never call it sharp. I'm honestly curious if the 5D IV is doing something different that would increase the 4K resolving power.

1080p is garbage. 4K only - 24p/30p/500Mbps.

Even the 1DX Mark II's 800Mbps for 4K/60p is not enough IMO.

I've used the 1DC many times and its image falls more in line with the cinema cameras.

5D Mark IV is from 2016...just a different time/newer technology. Cameras improve and change. They shouldn't look the same. Also, built for different purposes.

NorBro, you mentioned you mainly used neutral picture profile. have you used the 5D Mark IV with the C-Log upgrade? Would that help put the image more in line with the 1DC image quality?

It does help...besides the increase in DR, people use LOGs and work from scratch to try and match cameras if they need to. Like you wouldn't shoot in 'vivid' with one camera and 'landscape' with another or something. You want to start with that super flat image as we all know. I have C-Log on the IVs, but don't use it much. Definitely a difference in DR for sure though.

But the 1DC has those various pictures styles as well...neutral is what I used on it too, lol. But both cameras can be matched. I even mentioned the other day how I think all Canon cameras can be matched well. I just think sharpness or the perception of sharpness/detail varies across the cameras.

These are different sensors...cameras years apart.

This is a good example of the 1DC in neutral (not mine). I think it looks natural and cinematic (but not too sharp) whereas the 5D Mark IV would definitely look sharper to me:
