Canon 5d mark iii improved- olpf removed for higher resolution

Seems like we've steered pretty far off the OP's thread...

Indeed, it has gone off topic.

Like Rick suggested, if you aren't interested in switching your OLPF out, and you've said your piece, then it's time to move on. Nobody should be telling anyone, or lecturing anyone, on how to spend their money and time unless they ask.

And, if people don't want things to go off topic, stay on topic: That means not bringing other cameras into the conversation and certainly not stating assumptions on the technical specs (non image related) unreleased products as facts. xD Pretty simple type stuff.

As far as the OLPF removal goes:

Glad someone is investigating it or is willing to be the guinea pig. There's a lot of good it could do for some people's strong desires to have a great image without having to do certain things. To me, having a Full Frame sensor on a cheap car mount could mean the difference between great car footage or not. There are a lot of uses, so that's why I remain interested to see some improvements (or none).

You keep turning this into a question of "Is the 5dm3 with post sharpening good enough for professional work" and the answer is totally subjective because it really depends on what a person wants, not what you find acceptable. The 5Dm2 was used professionally broadcasted to thousands of homes over and over, yet, it is clear most of us are unhappy with it's image.
You might be unhappy but the vast majority of us are very happy indeed with the image of the the 5D2 otherwise it wouldn't have become so ubiquitous not only with professional productions but with swathes of amateurs. You can always pick fault with it. I have an XF305 it's good enough quality to be accepted for broadcast by the BBC & others yet I can pick faults with it. There are drawbacks & its not perfect but for the money it's an amazing image.

Can you cite your source? So I can put it in the FAQ over on BMCuser.

I believe I read it there in one of the threads. Several members commented on this. The comment related to the steady way in which a rechargeable battery loses it's capacity to hold power, arriving at something like 80% after the first year. I think if their was one thing I would encourage BMCC to take a second look at, it would be this.
They can always introduce a swap out service for battery replacement just like Apple do for iPhones/iPads & unibody MacBook Pros.

This is a forum. It's important that the discussion is full & not stifled particularly when wild unsubstantiated claims are being made for the efficacy of removing the OLPF. It's odd that it's those who don't own a 5D3 who seem to want to accept this miracle without evidence.

I am surprised that nobody has commented on the video clip that I posted earlier so I will post it again. This is a perfect example of how good & deceptively detailed the image from the 5D2 can be in bright sunshine. To my eye it looks much better than any of the hacked 5D3 video we have seen. If I had posted this & said that it was filmed with a 5D3 with the OLPF removed then everyone would be oohing & aaahing about the awesome quality. Just because this clip looks so good in these particular conditions doesn't mean that every clip will be the same. Please do download the 250MB .MOV file to see the full quality.

SO far I'm able to get a clean and sharp image stock just by adding post sharpen that takes 5 secs to do in post. Then if I put my Leica R glass on the cam, I'm seeing very nice results. Then, I take stills with the camera and use it as it's designed. I'll also take shooting at 5000ISO comfortably and 10000 ISO and getting away with it.

I concur.

There's no point repeating ones self constantly, or posting in such an offensive tone, or preaching at length, or veering wildly off topic though. It's very similar to flustered children screaming out the top of their lungs and becomes white noise after a while lol, keep it civil meeen

We're aware of what the 5D2 can do on its own and with an anti-moire filter and under good lighting. Check out the appropriate topics that were spoken about before: http://www.dvxuser.com/V6/showthrea...-specs&p=1986115617&viewfull=1#post1986115617 and my post: http://www.dvxuser.com/V6/showthrea...-specs&p=1986115650&viewfull=1#post1986115650

I am certain the 5D3 has more true resolution than the 5D2 even with the OLPF, so this is off-topic for this thread. Whether the removed/disconnected/replaced OLPF is actually doing a substantial enough difference... I'll wait for Andrew, James, and Bill to help out with.

Aaah! I'm looking forward to more real world footage. Thank you for the tests and your contribution.

If the vast majority of people were happy with the 5Dm2, then this thread wouldn't have ever needed to exist, because people would be happy with the 5Dm3 which is clearly better. Heck, the quality of the 5dm2 wouldn't even need to change then. But not everyone is, because everyone has a different threshold of performance. Many people kept with the 5Dm2 because for Full Frame, there wasn't anything else to replace it with, that doesn't mean it's great, it means that it has a capability relative to the sensor size and where it can be used (like tight spaces) and not because it offers anything IQ wise that is wholly desirable. What other FullFrame camera is better that professionals and amateurs can use instead at this body size today? I think the 5D has been GREAT in that aspect, but again, the strengths have nothing to do with IQ.

I own and used a 7D on many projects, and I very much enjoyed the camera for it's strong points, but I was always unhappy about the moire, aliasing, macro blocking, rolling shutter. When I bought it, I didn't have any other choice to replace it till the AF100 came along, then the FS100, and I did. Still, I kept the 7D because of it's size, BUT, that doesn't make up for the lack of IQ in the 7D and never has. Even when mixing footage the difference in quality is jarring. The 5dm3 addresses all of the things I very strongly dislike in the 7D. If you've read my posts about the 5dm3 you'd see that if Canon came out with a 7Dm2 with all the incremental changes of the 5D from 2 to 3, I'd be all over it.

But regardless of all that, where did I say that *I* wanted more resolution out of the 5D? My issue is with people's rudeness towards those who are exploring the OLPF question. The cons have been beat to death. It's also been stated that to truly know what's different, charts are what can help see that. But, honestly, I don't blame the people who are experimenting with these mods for stopping to contribute to this thread. It's not a discussion when you repeat yourself a million times saying the same thing.

Wellp, out of nowhere, a Mark III just landed in my circle. It's pretty much anything goes with this sucker, which means tearing the EF mount out and Hot Rodding it to heck and back for some PL action.

Now I'm definitely interested, so keep the examples comin'. If there's even a shred of proof in some charts etc, it's MaxMax time.

Very cool Kholi !!! Looking forward to seeing your testing. Try to do some of it with the EF mount before gutting the thing. I'm curious as to what your results might be with some of higher end L glass like a 24mm L f1.4 and the 50mm L f1.2, even if you have to beg and borrow just to test out for a few seconds each :)

That way we'd all have a pretty good comparison between EF and high end PL glass on the same cam. I'm really curious how much of a difference it makes.

Cheers,
Pete

So are you going to hack it. Or send it to MaxMax? Looking forward to seeing your tests. This will make you, as far as we know number 4 in the world to do this.

Shoot I think the closest I can access to that is like the 24/1.2. Don't have access to the others, but I'll do a little search before they go ripping into the camera.

Was planning on it for sure, even if it's just a chart.

Definitely gonna wait on 3hats/Bill or Andrew, or James, to post some more stuff before that happens. Probably wouldn't really be a bad idea anyway since it's going to get chopped up, but still.

flop!

I wouldn't rush into surgery. Post sharpening works a treat.

Won't you get a lot of vignetting with PL mount glass?

Nah bro. Flop would suggest I spent a dime. You know where my money's going. When I say circle, I mean cameras that are there to grab at will.

=B

Depends on what's being used and what focal lengths. A lot will, but some won't. I'm hoping the Kowa Anamorphic set covers the sensor....

=B Hur hur

Kholi, compare 3hats (Bill's) chart test https://vimeo.com/40977807 to James' post sharpened chart test: https://vimeo.com/39517721.
I didn't see any improvement (also tried post sharpening 3hats footage).

EDIT: Bill's video is gone. I'll post a still frame comparing it to James'.

Bill's chart was shot wrong wasn't it? No OLPF removal will happen until there's some more footages out there, but the PL mount, that's probably gonna happen regardless.
