Canon 5d mark iii improved- olpf removed for higher resolution

Meaning??

Although it's true that cameras have "quarks" (don't we all?), what Steve probably meant to say was cameras all have "quirks" (don't we all?).

I thought Steve's comments (in their entirety on that Vimeo page) were overly harsh, downright cold, unfriendly. Not saying what he said was untrue, but jeez.

When a guy who makes zillions charging hundreds of dollars for misc. bits of machined doo-dads for iPhones & what-not (and more power to him!) goes all nuclear on a filmmaker, rattling off lighting & negative fill and all -- without at least couching it just a bit as friendly advice -- I gotta wonder what's up with that?

While I respect your critique of his critique, and you have valid opinions, what I quoted from him is nothing more than the truth. His judgement on the guys film is his but it's not my focus. Steve Weiss is no film God of mine. But what he says about the tools being here, that is the zeroed in primary of the issue. Look at the tools and what they are capable of today, and more on the way. He is right about that and I know you own at least one Zacuto product.

I agree, that Steve was a bit overzealous in his breakdown of a guy that just wanted to show us some footage of his "new"camera. I mean come on! I would have posted back to Steve, "Hey bud, why don't you go tell them other new C300 users to black board the shurbs in their front yard that they are shooting to test aliasing". Yes, I would call him BUD. Then I would repost and tell say, "ANd BUD, While were at it and judging ones work, I really think your handgrips are way overpriced. How about removing the Zacuto logo and giving us %50 off"?

THe Mk3 is fine. SO is the Gh2, the FS100, AF100, F3, C300, even the Mk2........ I've seen totally awesome stuff shot from all of them.

Does anybody still thinks that c300 has some kind of magic sensor ... just s35 crop... same story as af100 "this is totaly new sensor it has no any conection with gh1 " really? same tech ....

Umm ... OK, I'll say it: I downloaded the 2nd video, the one shot at the beach, and, um, I don't think it looks very good. I've watched it 3 times on a 1080p monitor. Barely a single frame looks in-focus to me. It looks soft. Way too soft for a $3.5K US "HD video camera". Cheers?

He said the heat waves made it look softer, so I guess that's why?

You are not alone, though.

I can't agree at all with your comment reproducing what Peter said above. It is a FF device, guys ;-)

You know what? Everything below sucks!
You can quote me : D

Not exactly, shimmer yes. But his mention was the aliasing. What I'd like to see though, it'd be an in-depth wide angle testing before conclusive appreciation. As requested to James Miller BTW.

Don't be spoiler, Kholi ! : D Take a look on Michael's comments list:

So what are people saying? Here's a sample of quotes from people about all this. The responses say it all......

"Mother of god. That looks amazing."

"two Fridays ago when I got my MKIII I suspected the OLPF was too strong and that maybe Canon had purposely 'dumbed down' the MKIII in favour of the C300"

"Yes, game changer, it is a whole new world"

"Now THIS IS INSANE!!!!!! this is what the output from the 5DmarkIII should look like, what it was meant to look like"

"This is an indictment on Canon and their practices"

"Wow... vast improvement."

"That's crazy..looks like Canon is sabotaging their own camera...lol"

"Really impressed by this, looks much better than other 5D mk3 footage"

"Wow, this looks like full frame GH2! Looks fantastic."

"It looks like a lot of people will be 'hacking' their 5D Mark III bodies to turn them into 'single OLPF' bodies!"

"It looks amazing. Thats how the MKIII should have looked without the mods. Really nice job."

"I'm shocked there seems to be so much difference. Thank you for posting it."

"the 5d3 was in such a demand that they would have easily offset any profit from the C300 due the volume...these foolish decisions will come back to haunt them big time"

"This is really annoying. I will be looking at my new MK III and be thinking, To void, or not to void".

"It is a new camera! This is our dream of years ago..."

I just don't understand. This is a 22 mp still camera. As a still camera the aa filter is actually quite weak as it is (shows Moire in raw). So how could removing one of the aa filters make a 2mp hd video sharper? I just don't get it. Removing the aa filter on the af100 would obviously help things but a still camera?
My bet is the camera was crippled on purpose to protect C300. It is not 'the' AA filter but a secondary OLPF as James could respond on my first inquiry as soon I saw it mentioned. I even said this on dvxuser before James to have posted his mod findings.

@Emanuel
canon allways use two aa filters ....
one blurs x axis other y ....
that is design of their olpf....

i think they cripple 5d mark III in other way but aa removal diminish that....
maybe additional software blur....
Thanks for your information. In any case, as principle, do no trust in a manufacturer. Period. :-)

why trust them ...
as a customers we have different interest ...
more for less money .....
them less for more money....

That footage without the OLPF looks pretty good.

The only negatives are the dancing mushy grain patterns in the mid tones and shadows, and combined with the heatwaves it makes it look softer.

i served army with a guy who worked in McDonald's ....
he told me that army looks like summer camp....
its same for any corporation...
