Canon 5d mark iii improved- olpf removed for higher resolution

That footage without the OLPF looks pretty good.

The only negatives are the dancing mushy grain patterns in the mid tones and shadows, and combined with the heatwaves it makes it look softer.
I love it. Quite cinematic.

Some people say Valentines Day is not one day only. Maybe April Fools isn't only one day, too? :-)

James Miller has added an update to his comments on the 2nd video (beach):

Update 2: Messed up on the transcoding from the native files. Somehow I set the prores to interlaced! New edit coming later today. Sorry folks

Update. I plan a shoot along side another standard MK3
towards the end of the week. I should have shot local or something different to judge resolution. Very hard to judge with this video. I'll shoot on a nice prime for the next test.

I want to believe, but the jury is still out me thinks. Cheers.

Yeah, something was up, it clearly looked nowhere near as good as the other video. But, of course, say that out loud and you may get drawn and quartered...

Keeping an eye out for more info... extended April Fools would be lame at this point.

This is too little! Say it twice and you'll see, someone will be there shooting it ...with a 5DIII, Kholi! : D

BTW, the OP could just stand corrected because someone posted there a link to your comments ;-)
If not, nobody would notice to be soft (hey, film is soft ! : ) LOL

I am not the only one I think ;) to see this obsession for sharpness as nonsensical. But I guess this is sharp enough to be filmic.

I know we are in GHaholic land but you'll never have FF to look like 4/3", I am sorry to disappoint you ;-)

Also mentioned this on another thread yesterday : D

PS: Balance... ready to get not only the english but the cinematic meaning? : )

...and the fact that this image is now susceptible to moire/aliasing again, as well as no jello-reduction.

Ha...good one Emanuel.

But I was just comparing the first two videos. They didn't seem to be from the same camera. But both still looks good to me. Like some other folks I was waiting for a....GOTCHA. But....I guess this is the real deal. I do agree that now the cam is more supceptible to moire and aliasing (though you couldn't tell from these samples).

Ya, it looks fantastic. But the point is that image is now prone to aliasing\moire and has zero jello-reduction... and I can get just as good of an image as that without dicking with the internals of my brand new $4000 camera by doing some basic post work. Actually, it will end up being a better image due to the aforementioned aliasing\moire elimination and jello-reduction that the OLPF provides.

I don't understand why this is being glossed over. People are getting excited over a pretty image that was already achievable via sharpening in post... And its an image that now has aliasing/moire. And it requires you to void your warranty and physically modify your camera's internal components.

It makes no sense at all to me, can someone explain this please?

You simply cannot get the exact SAME image through post as you get when you capture a sharper image optically. You may get it PERCEPTUALLY as sharp, but you simply cannot reconstruct information that is not there in the image to begin with. If a filter blurs an image before the sensor, then the file recorded out of the sensor is of a blurred image.

Any aliasing or moire encountered due to filter removal is correctable in post as needed. With a physical AA filter, you are blurring ALL your footage to protect yourself against the possibility of moire or aliasing - wouldn't you rather decide when blurring is needed, rather than have everything blurred?

More tests are required to fully judge the effectiveness and drawbacks of filter removal on this particular camera, but in general AA filter removal will sharpen any camera's output - yes, at the expense of increased moire and aliasing in certain situations. Personally I don't see ultrasharpness as the ultimate goal however - color, DR and an overall pleasing image are far more important, and this comes from someone who uses ultrasharp Alexas and Epics every day ;)

As stated, an AA filter performs no jello reduction.

Well, so, do you get what I mean about being drawn and quartered? James, the video creator, did say that something was wrong with the download and that things didn't look as good as his first example so he's going to upload a new one.

And that's after the mountains of praise about an all new camera.

So is he crazy too? Or, just the people who express a different opinion?

I'm also not sure what it has to do with the GH, and why people keep making that comparison. I'm surely not making the comparison, and have not, at least not on these boards.

Seems like people just want to start a flame war, and like most wars it's emotionally driven response fueling the fire.

We're all here evaluating for the potential of usage and/or purchase. People will have different opinions, they are also allowed to voice them reasonably. We were commenting on the new video in comparison to the video prior (which we all agreed looked like a different monster) and what we saw, that's all.

I shot some night street stuff with my 50mm f/1.2 pentax (way sharp) @ f/2.8 2500 ISO. Added just a touch of post sharpening in FCP7. My MKII just became a paperweight.

PS I noticed a little aliasing on a picket fence after sharpening but it wasn't distracting like MKII aliasing. The power lines looked good. Using dialled down neutral settings the colours look really nice and there's more DR at high ISOs. Looks possibly more saturated than the MKII or it could be just that there's more contrast at high ISOs. I'm really liking the look at 2500 and 5000 ISO...beats the hell out of 1250 on the MKII. 10000 looks like 1250 overall.
