Canon 5d mark iii improved- olpf removed for higher resolution

Until further testing and more people do it, I'm leaving mine alone as I can post sharpen and have it look just as good. If and when it's discovered to have little side affects will I consider doing this or buying another body and having it done to that. But I must say, the possibility of it all is quite nice.

Have you watched the new video? It's a must to download for full quality.

Ya, it looks fantastic. But the point is that image is now prone to aliasing\moire and has zero jello-reduction... and I can get just as good of an image as that without dicking with the internals of my brand new $4000 camera by doing some basic post work. Actually, it will end up being a better image due to the aforementioned aliasing\moire elimination and jello-reduction that the OLPF provides.

That's a smart conservative approach to it. I think there might be options possibly, either 3rd party, or Canon.

Downloadin' now...
Done.

It is a new camera! This is our dream of years ago... Where's the aliasing? (moiré only comes with it)

Who wants to know about to void the warranty when there's this one, here and now?!
Go figure on the 4K C-DSLR ;-)

To my eyes the difference is just conspicuous; it looks great now. So why would the antialias filter hurt the video res... I think the only explanation is that indeed this thing is averaging from a pixel level and that those initial pixels need to be clean.

Whatever the case, for me, this is the dream realized. Assuming the ML guys can get into the codec, we're in business. I love full frame, just wanted it to sing. Now it can.

Downloadin' now, thanks for the heads up :-)

Probably, a few young people don't know but some time ago, it was you Michael who was giving to the world the last ones from Canon world before this HDSLR craziness : D The best are always where counts to be ;) as same today as ever ! :)

:-) :-) Fun times & good times...

So what are people saying? Here's a sample of quotes from people about all this. The responses say it all......

"Mother of god. That looks amazing."

"two Fridays ago when I got my MKIII I suspected the OLPF was too strong and that maybe Canon had purposely 'dumbed down' the MKIII in favour of the C300"

"Yes, game changer, it is a whole new world"

"Now THIS IS INSANE!!!!!! this is what the output from the 5DmarkIII should look like, what it was meant to look like"

"This is an indictment on Canon and their practices"

"Wow... vast improvement."

"That's crazy..looks like Canon is sabotaging their own camera...lol"

"Really impressed by this, looks much better than other 5D mk3 footage"

"Wow, this looks like full frame GH2! Looks fantastic."

"It looks like a lot of people will be 'hacking' their 5D Mark III bodies to turn them into 'single OLPF' bodies!"

"It looks amazing. Thats how the MKIII should have looked without the mods. Really nice job."

"I'm shocked there seems to be so much difference. Thank you for posting it."

"the 5d3 was in such a demand that they would have easily offset any profit from the C300 due the volume...these foolish decisions will come back to haunt them big time"

"This is really annoying. I will be looking at my new MK III and be thinking, To void, or not to void".

"The difference is clear and I now feel blind that I didn't see it. The 5d3 is sharp... with that freaking OLPF off!"

"It is a new camera! This is our dream of years ago..."

I just don't understand. This is a 22 mp still camera. As a still camera the aa filter is actually quite weak as it is (shows Moire in raw). So how could removing one of the aa filters make a 2mp hd video sharper? I just don't get it. Removing the aa filter on the af100 would obviously help things but a still camera?

It means the camera is line skipping for video. If it was doing a direct downscale, the AA filter wouldn't impact the image bc the photos resolve well over 1080p.

How come it's still so good at low light? It would not be if it was line skipping.

Something I read that Steve Weiss of Zacuto posted on a users video (shot on c300) but applies across the board.

"The cameras are here. Let's all stop looking for more resolution. Now what we need is mastery of the camera you have--learn the quarks, downplay their weaknesses, push their strengths and return to the art and craft of lighting--to create the mood of the scene--to motivate sources--especially for your specific camera. That's why I don't recommend buying a new camera every 3 months. To everyone out there, spend some time--master the one you have".

I agree.

Umm ... OK, I'll say it: I downloaded the 2nd video, the one shot at the beach, and, um, I don't think it looks very good. I've watched it 3 times on a 1080p monitor. Barely a single frame looks in-focus to me. It looks soft. Way too soft for a $3.5K US "HD video camera". Cheers?

The same way the 5DII was in video, except with better hardware/sensor? Idk something isn't adding up with this AA filter removal.

When the OLPF is removed, an electrical component/connection is changed. This could possibly trigger different software behavior.
