Canon 5d mark iii improved- olpf removed for higher resolution

I checked out James Miller (MKIII surgeon) on twitter, he sounds legit....but I think we're an about to be culled slave race living on a dying planet, so what do I know?

Yeah, looks like it's legit! Cool!

Maybe Canon planned it this way:

"Sure! You can get sharper video! You just have to take apart our camera and void your warranty!"

Genius :P

EDIT: anyone want to try the same thing on a Red or an Alexa? Bonus points if it's a rental!

Great :-( I just ordered the d800... Now this comes up. Back to the drawing boarding. I wish canon would play it straight instead of milking its products.

Who knows. I might just keep the d800 when it arrives (the d800 wouldn't arrive until early june because of the high demand which is probably a good thing). So far, IMHO, nikon has played it "more straight" than canon. Hopefully, the clean hdmi thing works out. I'm really sick of canon and would love to switch systems. I only have a 7d and several great lens so switching wouldn't be such a big deal... but man, I was all set on switching and giving canon "the bird".

This is pretty amazing. James Miller ( his vimeo below ) removed the optical low-pass filter from his 5D Mark III to achieve for higher resolution.

It's like an entirely different image coming from the 5D Mark III. Definitely download the 1080P for the best resolution.

Food for thought........ I mentioned days ago- I was curious why the Marionette short film from Canon shot on the 5D Mark III looked so much better ( more detailed ) than what was coming from the 5D Mark III videos filmed with the shipping cameras. Were the pre-production models missing a soft element? An OLPF?

Frame grabs with a slight USM applied- Without the OLPF the images are already sharp now from the 5D MARK III, however I wanted to see how a little USM applied would look.

Sweet! I just tweeted Cinematographer Guru Philip Bloom about this

Well is this is true, which it sounds like it is. Rather than tearing into it on your own, we should petition Canon to offer a removal service of the AA filter done at a canon service center and have the ability to hold onto the warranty. How much would you all pay for that service?

Dusty- Excellent idea! +1

New video posted. Download the 1080P for stunning quality. Why does this look like RED down sampled or C300ish- I even hate to say something so absurd as that. I'm now convinced they possibly added the second OLPF or to strong of one to suppress the potential of the the 5DMIII... This is what 4 years of advancement in technology like the newly added DIGIC 5 chips is supposed to look like. Nothings perfect, however this is quite nice!

Isn't the OLPF what eliminated moire/aliasing and reduced jello? And can't the detail and resolution improvements can be achieved in post as Bloom's video review shows... and that's on a moire/aliasing free image, too.

So, if I understand correctly, you can either achieve these improvements on a better overall image through post... or you can physically alter/mod your camera and continue to deal with aliasing and moire?

If I do not understand correctly, please someone clarify. Otherwise, this seems like a bunch of needless "excitement"...

so in 2 months time Canon will remove the filter ! I predict ;)

I mean that's what it sounds like to me, unless I misunderstand. The return of moire and aliasing fixed in the MK3 in exchange for more resolution which is a terrible trade IMO.
