GH2 Canon 5D Mark III 1080p is more like 720p compared to the GH2 !

In regard to the Canon 5d Mark III, Philip Bloom said it is less sharp, but sharpening in post seems to take care of that. While not ideal to have to sharpen that way, there is little to no moire and aliasing artifacts, and great low light. Now know that I am NOT a Canon fanboy...just wanted to share info that wasn't brought up here. I personally own HMC150, AF100 and GH2 and love them for their uses. I don't own any canon products.

What I'd like to see in the GH3 is more dynamic range, and higher bitrate codec. Also the GH2 added a 30p 24mbps mode called HBR wrapped in 60i. So there are 2 24mbps modes now.

I'd also add perhaps more of a pro version with a more rugged body and perhaps extended battery grip that could hold two batteries.

There are a lot of areas to improve on in the stills department,...

Yes! We want more creative filters!!! :D (just joking)

A new sensor with greater DR would boost the sales to people who still use the camera to shoot photos. That's what's most important, not 1080/60P.

Of course, but most of us care more about video features.

I just wanted to say that 1080/60p @28mpbs isn't enough for me for video. My GH1 could have 16 steps of DR, but with its original muddy codec, it would be useless. I don't want just more DR, I want a better codec; lets say AVCIntra for example. And I want that wihtout need of hacks.

So, why would Pana add AVCIntra (for example) to the next GH3 if there is no need to improve video features and just add a few more DR there, a few more MPx over there, and some fancy new creative filters?

I know that the GH series are not focused on indiefilmakers and alike, but it's a fact that that is what we are, we love GH cameras, and we want/need more powerful video features.

otherwise. For all we know, the camera could feature video professional ports or similar. XLR, HD-SDI. Can anyone tell me for a that it won't happen for a fact?

Anyone?

XLR? Hope you're right, but why would they need to add such features to a 850$-1250$ camera, when the brand new MkIII does not have any of these.

MkIII has Intraframe. I hope GH3 will have AVC-Intra 100 (4:2:2, 100 Mbit/s), but if it is AVCHD 2.0 only, we'll need Vitaly's magic again...

I want a better codec; lets say AVCIntra for example. And I want that wihtout need of hacks.

And how do you propose to to shoot AVC-Intra to SD without requiring a specific SD card (i.e. the Sandisk 95MBps card), which would be the kiss of death for a prosumer stills camera?

You never know what will happen with this camera, everything is speculation until someone from the company says otherwise. For all we know, the camera could feature video professional ports or similar. XLR, HD-SDI. Can anyone tell me for a that it won't happen for a fact?

My guess is that Mr. Reid could tell you with certainty. You know, since it's a fact that the "[hacked] $800 Panasonic GH2 and [not yet released] $3000 Blackmagic Design Cinema Camera offer significantly more in the ways of features and image quality" than the [not-yet-hacked] 5DIII. :) :) :)

PLEASE NOTE: I have adopted the Kholi method of noting sarcasm, thus the three smileys.

I agree with your statement and take it a step further. You never know what will happen with just about any camera until you get it into the hands of professionals who can get the most out of the tools.

^ Yeah. Sorry for my contribution to the downward spiral. I need to let my coffee kick-in before I start commenting.

Why not? They can just add an "extra-ultra-high-quality" mode along with the "average-joe" mode; with lots of warning mesages when selected about it can fail recording without an advanced SD card.

In fact, the GH2 already features a 24p@24Mbps mode for non average users.

Ok, AVCIntra 100 may be just a dream. But, what about AVCIntra 50? It's "only" 50Mb/sec. Even my GH1 is almost capable of handling these bitrates without crashing.

Or even just an MP4 file with h264 intraframe encoding with high bitrate.

We know thanks to Vitaly's hacks what the GH are capable of. Instead of encrypting the firmware, they should listen to what many people wants out of the box.

Yes, you're right. There are other things more needed, but I want the full sensor image resized to exactly 1080p lines. :)

But as I already said, if Canon does not improve their MkII, means that they don't want to hurt their videocamera sales, so Panasonic might follow this path.

Why to improve video if it already has one of the bests (the best with price/value ratio?) video on a photo camera?

Remember that GH1 video was very muddy, and GH2 only has one mode for 24mb/sec! If I want to shot at 25fps I can't go above 17mb/sec!

Thanks to Vitaly, we can release the true potential of the camera, but the way Panasonic is working means that they may follow Canon's path, if they aren't already doing that...

1080 60p at 28mb/sec (AVCHD 2.0) for the GH3? That's not a big step forward. Even a hacked GH2 would be more interesting.

Let's wait and see...

EDIT: I have a GH1(3), and I'm very happy with its resolution :)
The 25fps is HBR the same mbps as 24P,its identical resolution on my GH2 anyway.
1080i is 17mb

Andrew, if you're reading this post, when the hell are you going to do a proper review of the 5d3 showing the improvement from removal of the OLPF???

To the haters. I too am sometimes bugged by Andrew's style, but the man is a machine and seriously one of the better resources to independent filmmakers anywhere in the world. I for one am very pleased to have him out there testing, torturing, and reporting.

There are some professionals who also do the talk and tied to my canon-panasonic is best talk, just look at the works of Gunther Machu and Dan Carter, they produce wonders with cameras they have. While some professionals have been talking about the best camera, while if you watch what they produce from the so called best camera, it is nothing more off the ordinary.
