Canon 5D m2- Real optical viewfinder modification

What is the advantage of going from viewing an as-recorded image on the LCD to using an optical finder and deal with all the light lose? And is it worth the all that trouble and $$ on a non-ideal platform such as the 5D2? It doesn't take a genius to predict that Canon will have a large APS-C or greater sensor in a conventional camcorder body very soon with high resolution HDMI out for previewing on a proper HD monitor.

This is about having a camera with an optical viewfinder, not an electronic viewfinder. Light loss is about a 1/2 stop- pretty marginal. I just have a thing for optical viewfinders and I wanted to see if other people have a thing for them too.

It would be more than that lost. 1/2 stop lost from the beam splitter like you said, but more so on the fibre ground glass. Also when viewing thru the LCD, you're seeing an amplified version of the image. f/2.8 in a bar setting looks great on the 5D2 LCD and you can focus decently well, but f/2.8 in thru the lens, split by a prism and projected onto a ground glass will be much darker than the image in the LCD, such that it will hampering your ability to manually focus.

The more I think about this, I think it's taking a V.1 and wanting to much from it.

I'm over screens and gimmicks & extreme workarounds ( this kinda now feels like the adapter DIY days, gives me chills ) . Don't get me wrong I have spent most my life using TTL focusing, however I would just be happy to have a 5DMII right now.......

I think as these cameras develop and the VF technology goes over 1.2 million pixels +; these will do plenty and with zoom function in the VF, that just makes it even better.

V.2 , V.3+ of these are going to refine an already awesome camera as well the controls to control!

@Joe: Thats the first thing I asked about and it can be done, its just then your actually cutting the resolution to lower than 1080p, even for stills. In front of the lens filtering is a better idea.

Thank you Hunter! Now I can put my money on filters without feeling I might have missed something. :)

ok what about this. Buy an spare canon 5d 3 inch lcd and run the original lcd's cables to that lcd then mount it on an isrieli arm. Ad a hoodman, and presto chango youv'e basicaly got a red evf

could probably install a switch that changes between the camera lcd a the original lcd. Also put a conector bettewn the external one and the camera so it could be removed.

yeah that's a real simple mod... :Drogar-Dum(DBG):

Hunter, really digging this concept. Could be a great tool/feature for the camera, especially once 24p is implemented and the system/crowd begins growing in size and success.
