GH2 Canon 5D EOS (original) vs GH2... in photos...

I've been in the photography market for ages and if I have to pick top two dslr cameras (in terms of IQ), one would be 5D. Hadn't not been the video feature, I would've dropped 5d mk2 for 5d. GH2 doesn't stand a chance.
The color rendition/tonal response is gorgeous with the right picture style (New Standard, developed by Japanese photography magazine), auto white balance is far better than 5d mk2, per-pixel sharpness is amazing (Due to its using weak low pass filter along with great pixel pitch.)
Although time has passed, Nikon, Sony, Pentax, and even Canon's own offerings can't beat 5d in those areas.

BTW, if you wonder what other camera I'd choose for top 2, it's one of the cameras from Kodak that's even about a decade old. Subtle gradation and superior color those Kodak dslrs produce can't be found in any other dslrs.

What about the grain in the 5D? That is our major complaint with it...

It's not a low-light camera, no...

Never shot with Mk1 (and prolly never gonna do either), but just googling "5d portrait" sais it all. Large pixel count is the landscapeophile's dream; big juicy pixels the skintonesse.

By grain, you mean noise? and what about it?

5D original seems far more 'noisy' than my GH2. Don't get me wrong... I'd love to shoot stills in medium format personally.. I just don't see the real life benefit of shooting on the 5D original vs GH2, aside from the sensor size. I will have to do some A/B comparisons...

I don't know if 5d is nosier than GH2 or not. There used to be days when noise performance mattered so much but in nowadays, noise performance is not really what I'm after for modern cameras all seem to have acceptable noise performance. And, I find it hard to talk about noise performance. Some likes to go on debate about it only looking at benchmark tests and charts, but there're many other things that matter. For instance, how it handles chromatic and luminance noise, how it affects color rendition and gradation (Nikon's EXPEED1 was miserable on this issue. Due to its very strong noise elimination algorithm, it killed color information causing spot B/W or so-called gray-cast.)

What I'm still after is color rendition, balance, gradation, and tonal range. In that regard, I haven't seen a camera that matches original 5d (beside Kodak DSLRs). Plus, if you plan to make somewhat large print, GH2 is no match. Per-pixel sharpness and quality of 5d is quite amazing: rich and very well defined whereas GH2 looks puffy and pixelated. To my eyes, GH2's pictures stand somewhere between a point and shoot and dslr. As many others have pointed out, I, too, think GH2's picture quality would've been much better off if they didn't squeeze down 16mp on that sensor.

This is the exact reason we all don't drive the same cars.
There will always be objective differences, but the subjective will always be that.

Most of the current DSLR cameras shoot decent videos. Some shoot closer to ones final destination.

I'm sure this has been mentioned ad nauseum:
If one shot with the RED ONE and had this mindset, they would be very discouraged.

I'm not a fan of any one particular camera (LOL). You certainly would think I am since I work for the big N myself! If anything, the GH2 seems to display better video detail than most of the current crop DSLR cameras. IMO, I'm not seeing anything puffy or pixelated. If these terms did fit, it would not yield decent detail.

I actually was really surprised when I saw the amount of detail from distance trees in wide shots.

Having said that, Canon makes a killer camera. Times are about to get interesting as Canon and hopefully Nikon steps up to the plate. I imagine the GH3 should also be very good. Of course, we are talking video, not stills. Canon and Nikon definately have that department covered. Not many minds will ever change on this one.

Steve,
read the thread title again others' posts. This thread is about pictures not video. For video, I find GH2 to be hands down better than Canon (no moire/false color/aliasing and better detail) It, of course, isn't puffy or pixelated.
Again, my point was about picture quality not video quality.

Without a doubt the 5D2 produces the best stills image. Furthermore I prefer it's skin tones to any of the medium format digital backs, or cameras, too. The only dSLR that has better color than the Canon is the Nikon D3x.

Either of the 5D(s) have better dynamic range than the GH2, & besides higher resolution, the 5D2 also has better color than the original 5D.

That said I often shoot B-Roll stills with the GH2 due to it's 16:9 option, & ability to share lenses with the AF100. But all advertising jobs, or portraits are shot on the 5D2, or medium format back.

Best,
Bern
