Go for it! I have the Tak, I use it on both my 7D and 1DsMkIII for stills, and on my AF100 with the fotodiox adaptors for each mount. The build is miles beyond the Canon 50 1.8, doesn't even compare. The focus ring is a joy, very long throw, very smooth. Mine is razor sharp wide open, and the bokeh is like dreamy butter. I haven't used my Canon EOS 50 1.4 since I bought the Tak. I did have to "d-yellow" mine. Very simple to do if your copy has the yellow cast issue. A couple days in the sun removed any trace. Google it and you will get several expert opions on method.

theReflex said it. its a damn good lens. Mine was already "d yellowed" by the previous owner but its an easy process. just may be a little time consuming. and just to reiterate the build quality...i could take my tak, throw it at the nifty and smash the nifty into a million pieces and keep shooting with my tak. :) . I dont think mine is the SMC version...but i guess the only difference is the coating. I dont mind cuz i LOVE how mine flares.

Oh and mine isnt razor sharp wide open...but it has a softeness that is very pleasing to me. stop down to f2 and yah, sharp. I usually shoot at 2,8 or 4 so i can follow focus. still PLENTY shallow DOF.

The nifty however is good for stills though since it communicates with the camera

edit : my bad...after an ebay archival check...it says mulitcoated. doesn't have it on the lens though. I dont know if it should or not. got mine for $94
