Canon 4K C100 for IBC?

Am I in the minority, because I don't shoot LOG? I've never shot LOG on my 300 that I can recall and only a handful of times on my F55.

Ugh. I wish they could officially confirm things that WON'T happen. We WON'T be coming out with a C100 M3/MK2 4K upgrade. Why is that so much to ask?
They will be coming out with one. It's just unlikely to be now, at IBC.

Two simultaneous major launches in different price points are enough for one show. Besides, we're sort of presuming that other manufacturers will be idle. For the lower end/DSLR type video, there should be a new Olympus (M1 MKII) and possibly GH5. Fuji XT2 should be shipping shortly. So, it's not a bare cupboard.

Josh,

The easy way to move forward is your budget. Do you want to stay within a price target? One thing you can bank on is that Canon does not give anything away. So a C100 MKIII will most definitely cost $5999 or more. I could maybe see the original C100 vs 5DMK4 argument from a pure video perspective as long as the C100 was under $3,000 and you do not need 60p anything, do not need good autofocus or 4k. But the scale does weigh towards the 5DMK4 from a purely technical point of view.

I used to root for Canon. Now I root for Sony to improve its look and color and for Panasonic to just participate more often in the mid level market!

I could go quite a bit higher if it was a 4K cam. Probably wouldn't do $6k for a body. Do not care about DSLRs for video. . .been there, done that, not interested. Like the all-in-one aspect of a camcorder. Also not crazy about full frame sensors for video. I am ok with the DPAF upgrade to the C100 Mk1. Don't really see the point in spending money on the mk2 since it's more the ergonomics etc. that got upgrades and not the image/codec/resolution.

I hear ya. My ideal camera would be the size of the old Canon XF100 with a s35 sensor, awesome viewfinder, 10bit codecs and 24bit audio. Seems so obvious and simple but nobody has dome it. Panasonic tempted me with the DVX200 but it is too large for handheld and the image just kind of let me down compared to my PX270. I thought about a C300 but you have to get the right price when you step back in time because there will be limited resale value and I would want 1080p60. Smallish, nimble with powerful tools is what I need to be able to operate these things in fluid environments as a one man band.

I did not know the C100 MK1 was capable of getting the DP upgrade.

Oh yes absolutely. It's $500 or you can buy the cam with upgrade for $3000. I don't think the AF is as versatile as it is on the MK2 but it's supposed to work very well.

if i recall the AF upgrade for the C100 mk1 only does continuous AF in the locked down "center" part of the frame. personally i don't find this very useful and chose not to upgrade but to each his own.

I'm thinking that would not be my main worry with it. . .I was thinking switching it on momentarily to focus in an event/ENG situation where you're trying to capture shots of people without rolling focus back and forth ten times to find "the spot". If you're trying to use it for dolly/slider in/out moves or track continuously moving subjects in some other context maybe different story.

In my experience I never use the DPAF on the C100 mkII. I shoot mostly interviews and b-roll with it. In both situations you can usually take your time to get focus manually. Same would be true with an indie film. Only events/sports and documentaries is where I think it might be useful. Even then, most events I've shot is a guy on a podium and some b-roll. They're never all that eventful. So the extra $500 wouldn't be worth it to me, but it does really depend on what you shoot.

Can I just take a moment and say just how much I think the C100 in general is a great camera. When I think back to my first shoestring budget feature I shot back in 2003, we used a Canon XL1. A camera that at the time was $3000 used. 60i, standard definition, 1/3" CCD sensors, XLR audio that attached to the camera via RCA connectors with no phantom power. Fast forward 13 years and you can buy a brand new C100 mkI for $2500. Super 35 4K sensor shooting to HD files, CLog, XLR with phantom power, much more affordable and varied interchangeable lenses, 24/30p, SD cards instead of tapes. Really we've got it pretty good these days.

And even those specs are outdated now (at least for me)...you can get a decent 4K camera for $1K.
