Canon 4K C100 for IBC?

I am in the market for a 4k and considering the DVX200 at $4200, If they add 4k to the C100 II at the current price offering I will pick up one. But knowing Canon they will probably price it at $5999.99

I'll buy if it does 50 fps at 4K so I will probable won't buy it and get the new sony again.

HDWarrior hints at it. Anyone heard anything more? ...
According to folks in retail, there won't be a C100 III with 4K.

C200 with 4K? Unlikely as well. Canon will be releasing 5D MKIV and would not want anything to interfere with its launch.

Now, a fixed lens camera is a possibility.

PS. A lot of these rumors sites compile wishlists rather than solid rumors, especially if there are no solid rumors at a given moment in time. Then others pick it up, as if it was something tangible, and run with it.

I would prefer a firmware update to the mkII that allows it to record 4K. Even if it's a small paid upgrade. That's a camera already in hand. :)

What baffles me though is that the C100 doesn't offer a 2K shooting mode. For being a cinema series camera you'd think this would be a mode.
Here are the sensor specs:

Effective Pixels

3840 x 2160 pixels; Approx. 8.29 megapixels

Total Pixels
4206 x 2340 pixels; Approx. 9.86 megapixels

I definitely think we will see a C100 Mark II or possibly even a C200. I also think we will not see either of those for another 1-2 years. At that point, the feature set will be fairly average with a lot of other companies offering way way more....on paper. Canon will deliver what it always does though.....fantastic colors, super easy workflow, and a very robust camera. Super conservative company. I actually like that a lot. I would rather have less features......but great features that do exactly what they are supposed too. I'm also a realist and don't think Canon is going to make a move on this soon. They will trickle cameras out slowly and milk their production costs as much as possible. It seems to be their business model....and though its taxing on the consumer, it does seem to work for them.

There's room for both this year - with the DSLR having the regular limited video specs (low bitrate and no log) and the cinema camera having the more advanced features - but probably not going to happen.

There has definitely been room for both for a while. I totally agree with that. Call me pessimistic, I just don't see it happening this year....and probably not next year either. Having room for a product and planning to maximize financial profits by prolonging product roadmaps are different things. I'm sure Canon is making decisions based off numbers not room. Just my 10 cents.

I can see 5D MKIV not having Log or a decent bit rate/codec upon its introduction.

But it has to be upgradeable (firmwareable?) at some point. With Canon's long product cycle, a camera short on specs will leave them behind the eight ball right away. Imagine Sony coming out with A9/99II - 6K, Log and 10-bit and Canon with center-cropped 4K, no Log and 8-bit. This won't appeal to more than Canon loyalists.

Not to derail the convo too much, but what will be interesting to see is if the 5D Mark IV shoots 4K with the full-frame. As much as we all love our cinema cameras, there are just as many people who love shooting on these SLRs, and having 4K via FF from Canon would be really nice.

Yes. It will be a surprise and a departure if Canon opens the flood gates with the 5DMK4 video specs. They might release the first ever "soft" 4k camera. :) Sony kind of has to cram in the features in order to pull attention away from Canikon. The 5DMK4 will be a solid camera no doubt but what is really out there beyond 4k? The only thing left is better color bit depth and better codecs. 6k 8k? I do not think these are selling points but better color & codecs kind of gives the farm away so to speak.

Frankly, I do not need to upgrade my 5DMKIII for stills jobs. It has been paid for and profitable for many years. So I am looking at anything I would purchase going forward from a video performance prospective. I am not Canon's ideal customer.

I would be really shocked / surprised / excited if Canon gave the 5D4 C-Log

Honestly, I wouldn't care if they didn't give us 4K at all....but gave us tack sharp 1080P (down sampled from a 4K sensor) 10 bit C-Log footage with 15 stops of DR and their fantastic autofocus capability....with 120P.

Can't believe that camera doesn't exist (in the Canon lineup). Why in the world not? I would gladly trade 4K for those features.

Because Canon.

I was a die-hard Canon guy. I still love their colors and the C-line form factor. I defended them with the "but they're just being slow so when they come out with a 4K camera, it's awesome" line. But they're glacially slow for what I can only imagine are purely profit-maximization reasons.

So, I dumped all of my Canon gear and switched to Sony stuff earlier in the year. You can only wait so long.

Given that A6300 - a $1,000 camera - has both Log and an oversampled (from 6K) image, Canon would be well advised to do likewise. What they'll probably end up with (A-version) is the 8.8 MPX center-crop 4K and H264 100 Mbps 8-bit codec. Will it justify a $3,000 camera?

I'd say, "no".

At the very least, they ought to have (B-version) a 17.6 MPX 4K, 10-bit, 305 Mbps internal recording.

Of course, if it can be upgraded at some point, they may sell the A-version first and B-version a year from now but, to give Canon some credit, that's not their MO.

As to the overlap between 5D MKIV and (the eventual) C200, if they do the B-version of MKIV, then C200 will have a very narrow niche to squeeze into. And it will become even narrower if they come out with a 1" copy of DVX-200 at this IBC.

Yes, I would trade 4k for awesome 1080p60/120.

Panasonic already has mentioned the UX180. Doesn't it have a 1" sensor? I think the 1" sensor size can be quite a workhorse for making money. Though I would rather see a P2 camera with all of the 10bit codecs rather than a DVX-200.

Looks like 8-bit 422 500Mbps MJPEG for the 5D Mark IV (CanonRumors).

Same as 1DX Mark II for 4K/24p.

As you all probably already know (but what the hell), I find the Canon Rumors site to do a decent job tracking the various, um, canon rumors. And also with rating them on a simple scale from "dreaming" to "sure thing." They don't always get it right, but they seem to fairly often.

Latest from them on the the 5DmIV:
[h=1]*UPDATED* Canon EOS 5D Mark IV Specifications & Image[/h]A different source has added new specifications. We’re pretty confident in their validity.
Below is the latest we’ve been told about the upcoming Canon EOS 5D Mark IV. I would be inclined to put a [CR3] on this, but I will wait for further confirmations.

I don't love the MJPEG approach. I can stomach it....but don't love it. What I am afraid of is that they are not going to give us a good 1080P option.....just like the 1DXII. If we get MJPEG.....but that super soft 1080P that looks like 720P or lower....I think I'm gonna be a little nauseated.

That soft 1080P look with limited DR , in my opinion, is just the absolute worst. I think they hit the nail on the head with the 1DC giving us a s35 mode that actually has wonder 1080P ability. Omitting the sharp s35 mode is a big mistake in my opinion. I really hope they include that.

That way, shoot 4k when you need 4k. Its great for high detail shots. Other stuff...shoot sharp 1080P. The problem is when you are forced to shoot everything MJPEG because the 1080P sucks. Then your just spinning your wheels in post when you should be blowing through stop lights.

I had the 1DX Mark II for a few days and even the 4K wasn't that impressive. I don't know what it was about it, but the image just wasn't there for me. At least not for $6K.
