I would love it if someone with this lens were so kind as to shoot a portrait, wide open, and leaving enough room to crop into the APS-C section. It would help some of us gauge the shallowest DoF attainable at portrait distance.

I've been looking for one on reviews posting lens settings but no luck so far.

Thanks!

No, I didn't look on flikr. But how would I know the aperture without looking through hundreds and hundreds of pictures? People hardly ever specify lens settings.

I wish it was possible.

I'd love to see a picture like the one I cropped on my last post, but a few inches further back. That would lessen the effect barrel distortion noticeable, and to get a more comfortable looser framing.

Coming from a background of 20+ years in commercial photography, you have to keep in mind that EVERY camera will distort the human face if you are closer than 5 feet.

This means that you are going to want at least a 50mm lens on an APS-C camera ( 85mm on a full-frame camera ) in order to crop closely without distorting the person's features.

Well said, Dingo.

A 35mm lens is not a portrait lens. It's a Normal/Wide depending on which sensor size. If you're looking for a portrait lens then he's right, you should be rolling to a 50mm or 85mm.

25 to 35mm focal lengths are for traditional two shots, mediums and even wides depending on your tastes. Some compositions when close focus falls within mere inches can be quite interesting on these lenses as well.

I didn't know that. I wish I had a bit more $$$. I've been pulling my hair for a couple of weeks now.

Thanks!
