Canon 24p !?

Denver's compressor stuff looks decent, actually. I'd take that if I were primarily on Apple. I'm shifting to Windows now, personally. Hardware is just much better to me.

Pixel Blend is what I mean. It's under Frame Blend in After Effects.

Pretty much, man. This is one of those things that I can look beyond because nobody outside of the forums is going to frame by frame. I'd LOVE some picture perfect 24P. Even in that MKii RED and GH-1 video the 24p out of the RED and GH-1 were like "omg I want that back" but the MKii 24p conversion didn't bother me one bit. Why?

Because the thing was shot well and it was close enough to 24p to satisfy. So be it.
You were there to watch the demo at Birns & Sawyer or did you see it online? If online do you have a link?

The clip in my signature was just dropped on a 24p timeline in FCP

I'm using shake on my feature if there isn't a new improved 24p DSLR out by the end of the year. I might cheat and use the red for some fast action sequences but I'll do some testing with shake and have a peep.

The new version of Compressor now allows you to work on FCP while it's rendering. That's a great improvement. As far as the 24p encoding from 30p source I haven't tried it yet.

Perfect 24p from 5d in Shake.

Sorry it's so boring. The only real motion is at the beginning and end when I sit down and stand up. It's the only sample I have up but I can assure you that the only thing that can breakdown the shake conversion is a severe whip pan.

Though the other conversions can mainly deal with motion like this, the shake conversion is the only one I've seen that delivers frame perfect on everything but whip pans.

how long did it take to convert?

Hmm. Not completely sure, didn't clock it. Might try later and do an exact time, but I believe about 10 minutes. So, about 20:1 conversion. Yes, really sucks, but I'll plan on setting that time aside if need be.

shake will break down as well with multiple objects crossing going in different directions with a slow pan or even no pan at times. Also trees/bushes and various moving objects will cause it to warp in similar conditions. The less movement behind the subject(s) the better

The best for sure but not bullet proof.

Canon rumors have just posted a rumor about an imminent firmware update for the MKII, maybe we won't have to mess with 24p conversions after all. It makes sense if the 60D has 24p then the MKII should get it's update at the same time so we don't flog our MKII's on ebay and get the 60D.

I really hope they don't disappoint this time.

Let's think about this:

MKii cost you what, 2800 maybe? Extra Battery?

60D will be priced at what... 1500 or so?

If you put your MKii on Ebay, CAnon still gets your 2800, but YOU only get 2200 back. Then what?

You drop that 2200 on a 60D. Canon STILL wins even more money from you. Even if the 60D got 24p, I see no reason why the MKii has to get it as well. In fact, if capitalism in a rocky economy is of any indication, they should release a 60D (lower price) with 24p and take the extra sales that they wouldn't normally get. How many MORE people, aside from the consumers who don't care about video and will happily buy a 60D anyway, will pick up a 60D on release date just to get 24p and stop dealing with this crap 30p stuff? How hard would it be, for you, to make the decision to hose your MKii in favor of an APS-C sized sensor w/24p? Sure as hell wouldn't take me more than three seconds to think it over, and that's just because I have to think about who I'm going to sell it to to get the maximum return on my investment. LoL

Not to mention, how much of Panasonic's GH-1 flare can they rip away with a quick 60D w/ 720/24p offer, same H264 image as the MKii and T1i? I doubt it's a 24p update for the Mkii, would be happy to be wrong, but let's say this: they might be better off slitting the wrists of MKii owners like they did with the XL-h1 owners when the A1 came out.

So many angry XL-h1 owners, most of which jumped ship and dumped their H1's at a lower price to pick up A1's. Canon still wins.

Choose your god, then pray.

I quite like some of the old Norse models, lots of weaponry.

You need to factor in that if you put your 5D2 on the second-hand market (and it sells) then that is a sale (of a new 5D2) lost by Canon.

It is, accurate. But it's a 2:1 ratio. For every two cameras we buy, one guy doesn't buy one direct from Canon. Is that so bad? Especially considering that one guy is probably going to buy some Canon glass anyway and an extra battery if they didn't get one.

I still agree with what Stu at ProLost says when he heard a Canon Rep say that 24p is not possible with how the chip is clocked.

It is a hardware issue, not a firmware issue.

Gods are for sheep

I paid $3900 AUD with extra battery but there was a price rise here on the body and I managed to get old stock, I think the RRP is $4800 now for the body so I should just only lose a couple of hundred. I did a $1400 shoot with it but the clients are complete morons and I'm not sure they will use the shot.

Possible reasons for downgrading- 24p, 1.6x crop cine DOF, less jello

Or, they give another update for the Mark II, this time for 24p while they gimp the 60D with 30p only. This way they keep the Mark II's higher price point logical for not only photographers, but for those that are interested in the video.

Although, maybe they'll limit the 60D's video modes to 720p. I doubt it though. Even with manual controls, if they include them, limiting to 720p it has trouble justifying its price against the Rebel T1i. At least for the Joe Six-pack consumer segment of the market, which is huge compared to us.

If that is the case, then Canon, you best get working on a new chip because GH1 here I come.

I was told the same thing before Manual Controls came out. MC in July, no 24p ever on MKii and if it was possible, it would need to be sent in.

So I don't expect it but who knows?
