I predict that the sales of the 18-80 CNe will be healthy and will hopefully show that there is an audience of us in production who want either top of the line EOS glass or a mid-line like CNe. The Canon cinema lenses are outstanding but at $20k to $30k each, are out of reach for most of us to own. But I would gladly pay $3k for the lens we are discussing as a 2.8 EF with IS, L build quality lens and I would gladly pay double that for the same specs as a CNe lens with servo, etc. The only thing holding back the 18-80 is the T4.4. Not a factor if you can light everything, but if you are doing a narrative show with a budget, why not just rent the cinema zooms? The CNe seems to be aimed more at indies, low end episodic, event and doc. And with lenses like the 24-70 2.8 II and the 70-200 2.8 IS II, Canon has proven they can make outstanding lenses for around $2k. If they could just take those type lenses and make them a bit more video friendly without going nuts on the price, they would sell a lot of them. It seems like everyone who can't afford cinema glass prefers EF lenses, regardless of camera brand. But the focus pitch, markings and focus by wire stuff is no good for video, we make do, but most of us would pay more for a more video friendly Canon lens.
