Canon 24-70 f2.8 L

That's good to know, mate, because I do a ton of handheld, run & gun stuff for indie doc as well. I have a 17-35 L which is great, but I just noticed yesterday shooting a doc how much micro-wobble there was at 35mm (of course on 7D it's longer, but still), and I usually pride myself in my handheld. So it was quite a letdown. Haven't seen that kind of microwobbling on anything else I've done on many different cameras from video to film. So I was wondering if IS was more a matter of helping for stills on the Canon, and not so much for video. But if you're saying it helps, that's great.

I think I'm going to pull for a 24-105L IS USM, unless someone can convince me that the faster lens on the 24-70L is that much more useful for video. With doc, I need a good zoom over a prime, as I'm changing focal lengths quite frequently for options during post.

I had the 24-70L and now use the 24-105L. The IS was that big a deal.

My two go-to lenses are the EF-S 17-55 f2.8 and the 24-105L. I shoot mostly outdoors, so the f4 isn't really a concern for me.

Thanks for sharing, you've pushed me over the edge on that lens--will order one as soon as I'm back home. On a trip testing 7D now--lots of challenges--reducing the shake will be one less to worry about. I'd love to see any of your handheld 7D work--do you have anything online? Everything else I've seen online is just the usual stuff of closeup faces with tons of bokeh and some landscapes. Nice, but one-dimensional and no narrative. What kind of rig are you using for run & gun?

I'm sorting through footage I shot back in November on a trip to Brazil right now. Nothing posted yet, so I can't share, but here's a link to a piece I shot with the GH1 a few months before that…

My main handheld rig is a Zacuto Tactical Shooter with Z-Finder. The thing I like most about it is how solid it is and how small it breaks down.

I shot with my 24-70 L lens yesterday, and compared to the Sigma 10-20.
IT was night and day, the feel and look of the image was very nice on the Canon.

The Sigma seems a bit distorted, Wide, but distorted, even though it is not supposed to be overly distorted (or maybe I just don't prefer that wide of a view). After shooting with a 2.8 lens, its hard to be happy with anything less.

Interesting comparison.

I'm still uncertain about whether to go with a 24-70 2.8 or 24-105 4.0. I do primarily vérité documentary, with a fair amount of indoor shooting--where the 2.8 would help.

However, I need enough variance in focal length to be able to shoot for cutaways (like hands, close-up of the face), and I'm not sure 70mm would be enough of a difference from 24mm to work. Tough call...

I also have a 17-35mm 2.8L, which makes me lean toward a 24-105 4.0--but I've noticed 4.0 is just not quite fast enough for some indoor situations. Any opinions?

If I can get my hands on both to rent, I will.
