C100: Canon 24-105 EF IS USM, NOT IMPRESSED AT ALL WITH IT

Thanks Nature Shooter! I will take you up on that offer, I'll buy lunch, we'll do a side by side. But it will have to be after January 5th. I appreciate it.

Sounds good to me. I'll send you a PM with my contact info so we can figure out a good time for both of us to meet up.

not really trying to revive the topic but was just researching about the new sigma 24-105 OS
it seems that its a true F4 lens where as the canon is a F5........

Ned - I feel your pain. But it is a great range.

Let me know when you guys are testing I could be interested in joining. Have a C100 body and some L primes, a Ninja2 also. Ned and I actually did some work together this year...small world.

Hey Remsy, Happy New Year! Just used the 24-105 on the 70D for 2 weeks on vacation in Australia and I experienced absolutely no transmission loss on telephoto when using a still camera. I was wondering if anyone knows why that is? Why do I lose almost a stop when it's on the C100?

When you're using the lens on a DSLR for stills, and looking through the OVF, the lens aperture remains wide open at f/4 and only stops down the iris for the moment of capture. Wide open at f/4 there is no loss of transmission through the range of the lens. When you stop the lens down during video capture or in a live-view mode, then you will begin to see transmission fall-off through the range.

Don't ask me why, though, I just recently noticed that the lens behaves this way.

Yeah, there is definitely something strange about the transmission loss in video. I've noticed it on stills too though, so there must be some kind of black magic at play. But my copy is reasonably sharp, and basically parfocal which is very helpful.

I shot all yesterday on the 17-55 2.8, which seems like the most common zoom alternative. The images look nice but I often wanted more reach, plus it is very out of focus when you zoom in and the zoom/focus rings are reversed.

no great option yet unfortunately. If I have the time I'll use primes otherwise the convenience of the 24-105 usually wins out for industrials.
