Canon 1DC crop modes - surprise!

While the 1DC seems to produce extremely sharp footage with high detailed scenes, it gets ugly with things like this:

2_1.2.1.jpg

This is the 1DC, resized and exported in Davcinci resolve.

2_1.1.1.jpg

This is the same thing, shot with a proper 10bit low compresion camera for comparison.

macgregor:
Thanks for posting the tests!
I'm assuming that posterization in the 1DC would disappear if recorded to a Ninja uncompressed through HDMI?

We would need to test. Posterization could come not only from the codec but also from the 8bit color depth.

A couple more shots:

Detail vs crop mode - and check for posterization in the background (yes it's not only youtube, those steps are in the original files)

And here some DR and skintones vs other cameras.

Thank you for the very interesting tests. From the specs there are different super35 crop modes.
Which one are you using ? I see an IPB and an ALL-I compression method.

Hi ! Thank you very much again. I am sorry I am not an expert but this crop modes have caused a huge interest lately for their possible evolution in all the photocameras. The days for line spikking are ending, I hope.

While the 1DC seems to produce extremely sharp footage with high detailed scenes, it gets ugly ...

this cannot understand. It is not clear from the spec if the bit rate is variable for this crope mode you are using.
And sincerely I do not understand why a variable bit rate in general.
But the real news todays are these crop modes. Just think how many excellent full frame are out there waiting to be used correctly.
Thanks again and regards,
gino

macgregor:
Is there any chance you plan to test this uncompressed through HDMI, to confirm whether the 1DC can do better?
Thanks again for the info!

It doesnt. this was something I was looking at as a main selling point. shame

I read an article. Canon put the video function on the 5D as a giveaway.
Then surprised by the exceptional success of this function began to think seriously to a reflex able to shoot high quality video.
And so they trashed the line skipping for instance and designed the 1DC.
Problem is that from what anyone can see here and find in the web the video from the 1DC is at least very very good.
Someone says better than the c300 ! at 4000 $ less
If the 1DX not that different as HW from the 1DC had the same video modes .... this would be how much ? 8000 $ less than the c300 with better video ?
Just look at the reaction when someone has thought about hacking the FW of the 1DX to make a 1DC clone
I am curious to see how long will it take for a total conversion of all the photocameras for serious video to these crop modes
Maybe the Companies have decide to keep it as an elite features.
And the poor people are sentenced to stick to the line skipping for ever.
Even a blind sees that this is the right way to make video. The images that I see here are absolutely excellent.
... am I wrong ?
A 1DC maybe with a raw output is a camera for digital cinema on par with all the best out there.
Sorry for the outburst.:(

gino

Is there any light loss in S35 crop mode? Or to ask another way, would one be able to record super crisp crop-sensor video with all the low-light benefits of a full frame DSLR?

I am not an expert but I do not think so.
The new prototype from Panavision and Nasa is said to do exactly the same thing. It has a huge sensor ... a 70mm thing that can be cropped down to get a more common super35 format. I really do not think that Panavision would adopt a technique with a bad impact in quality.
Let's be clear ... this cropping technique is the best news of the day. Everybody are talking of the exceptional performance of these crop modes.
The line skipping was smoke in the eyes in comparison.
Just read this ....

Topic: Features that are NOT possible - please don't request them

the first being .... Features copied from another Canon camera (crop mode recording, clean HDMI out...)
Copying Canon code or functionality may carry legal risk for us. We do respect the Canon company and love their products and we are strict about staying on the right side of the law

for me it is all perfect clear. We cannot expect a FF Canon with crop video for less than 12.000 $
Enfranchising from the slavery of line skipping is very expensive.
So the challenge is for other Companies to do so ... maybe Nikon ?

Hey Guys,
I want say that the 1DX don't have the crop mode in the menu.
Strange is in one little test where I use two lens, Canon 16-35L at 35mm. and Walimex VDSRL 35 T1.5 for Canon, the result I can't understand is that the image with the Walimex lens is cropped like a S35 sensor, like you can see in this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fmWvgE_N8B8&sns=em, look the microphone take. remember all both lens are for FF sensor.

Does the bit-rate drop when you record low detail scenes? It sounds like the MJPEG is VBR. If it is Canon really screwed up.

Can you record 4k over the HDMI out?

I remember reading somewhere that the 4k is a constant bitrate of 500mbps, although I can't be sure it didn't say maximum and I just assumed constant.

Also, no, you can't record 4k over HDMI, you can only record 4k in-camera.

Good old-fashioned HDSDI doesnt do 4k either. Which leads me to my next question which would be how many people in this thread can review 4k material on their laptops or pads? Assuming that the OP has a capable 4k QC monitor, most of us have to take his word for any of this beyond the HD crop. Interesting camera, I think it does scream "documentary", it also screams "firmware tiering" though.

I have tried running a clip on my desktop (pretty decent with 12GB RAM and a fast RAID drive), and it was quite choppy!

Tried playing back a MJPEG 4K clip from the 1D-C on a Ultrabook running on Ivy Bridge ULV dual core 1.9Ghz Core i7 with 4GB 1600Mhz DDR3 RAM and 128GB SSD, playbacks fine here ! :)
Looks like the promises Intel made about Ivy Bridge's integrated GPU supporting 4K playback is true :P

Can you check the bitrate so we can confirm whether it's VBR or CBR.
